Dimapur | December 17
With the theme, “Harnessing Media Vibrancy, Embracing New Frontiers,” the Dimapur Press Club (DPC) celebrated its silver jubilee on December 16 at the Dimapur Government College Auditorium.
Speaking on the occasion, founding member and convenor of the DPC Silver Jubilee Organising Committee, Dilip Sharma, provided a brief background of the club. He shared that the club was originally formed in December 1999 as the Press Club of Dimapur when four local journalists recognized the need for a structured organization to address the unique concerns and challenges faced by media professionals in Dimapur.
Sharma also highlighted the various activities and initiatives undertaken by the club over the past 25 years and led a minute of silence in remembrance of those who had passed away during that time.
In his welcome address, President of the DPC, Imkong Walling, remarked that 25 years is a quarter of a century—a long, long time in a human’s life. He added that the jubilee celebration not only reflects on the past but also looks forward to the future. The chosen theme, he noted, resonates with the current challenges and opportunities facing the profession. Acknowledging the rapid evolution of the media landscape, he emphasized that it is up to journalists to adapt and redefine the news they broadcast with objectivity.
The Speaker of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA), Sharingain Longkumer, was the special guest, while Yirmiyan Arthur Yhome, Deputy News Director for Asia-Pacific at The Associated Press, served as the theme speaker.
On the occasion, a memorandum was presented to the Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio through the NLA Speaker, highlighting the need for a permanent office for the club, the enhancement of operational subsidies for accredited journalists, the implementation of a pension scheme for accredited journalists, the increase in slots for accredited journalists, and the request to distinguish between journalists and social media influencers.
Editor of Nagaland Page, Monalisa Changkija, also conveyed a message to the Government of Nagaland through the NLA Speaker to the Chief Minister, highlighting that government advertisement rates have not been changed or increased since 2011. She expressed that this is a significant concern, given the current economic situation and inflation.
Meanwhile during the programme, the NLA Speaker handed over a letter to the DPC President, confirming a temporary office for the club at Super Market, Dimapur. As a ‘member’ of the fraternity, he also assured that he would take up the matter raised in the DPC’s memorandum with the relevant authorities. The Speaker also released the Souvenir Cover for the DPC Silver Jubilee celebration.
With the motto “Truth and Justice,” the Silver Jubilee celebration marks a significant milestone in the journey of media in Nagaland.
