DIMAPUR, October 1 (MExN): The Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) has been extended for six more months in 9 districts and areas falling under 16 Police Stations in 4 other districts in Nagaland. The controversial legislation was partially withdrawn from the state in April, this year.
The Ministry of Home Affairs, in a notification on September 30, informed that the decision to extend was taken after reviewing the law and order situation in state. It said that the districts of Dimapur, Niuland, Chümoukedima, Mon, Kiphire, Noklak, Phek, Peren and Zunheboto and the areas falling within the jurisdiction of Khuzama, North, South, Zubza and Kezocha Police Stations in Kohima district; Mangkolemba, Mokokchung-1, Longtho, Tuli, Longchem and Anaki ‘C’ Police Stations in Mokokchung district; Yanglok police station in Longleng district; Bhandari, Champang, Ralan and Sungro Police Stations in Wokha district have been further declared as “Disturbed Area” for a period of 6 months. It will take effect from October 1 “unless withdrawn earlier,” the notification said.
