‘Yellow’ alert for Peren, Phek, Kiphire and Tuensang districts

The depression over Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm by October 24, causing heavy rainfall in many locations in India including Nagaland and the North-East in the next few days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted on Saturday. 

Likewise, the IMD’s Regional Met Centre (RMC) Guwahati on October 22 also issued ‘Yellow’ alert for Peren on October 24-25 and Phek, Kiphire and Tuensang districts on October 25-26.

As per the IMD, the Depression over southeast adjoining eastcentral Bay of Bengal moved northwestwards on October 22 is “very likely” to move northwestward and intensify further into a Deep Depression over eastcentral and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal by Sunday morning. 

Subsequently, it is very likely to recurve gradually north-northeastwards and intensify into a cyclonic storm over central Bay of Bengal by October morning 24 morning, stated the IMD’s five-day All India Weather Summary and Forecast Bulletin issued on Saturday evening. 

Continuing towards north-northeastwards and crossing Bangladesh coast, the cyclonic storm is expected to make landfall between Tinkona Island and Sandwip around October 25 early morning, it added. 

Consequently, the IMD predicted thunderstorm accompanied with lightning at isolated places very likely over Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal and Kerala & Mahe on October 23.

Likewise, on October 24, thunderstorm accompanied with lightning at isolated places likely over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, the national weather forecaster stated. 

RMC Guwahati issues alert 
Meanwhile, in a Special Bulletin  issued on Saturday afternoon, the RMC Guwahati issued ‘Yellow’ alerts for Peren District with ‘very likelihood’ of heavy (7-11 cm in 24 hours) to very heavy (12-20 cm in 24 hrs) on October 24-25.

For October 25-26, similar alerts were issued for Phek, Kiphire and Tuensang districts.

During the same, the RMC stated that the expected impacts include poor visibility, mudslide/land slide /landslip, damage to roads and crops in the maturity stage and possibility of flash floods due to intense spell of rainfall.

Among others, it suggested for preventive action such as avoiding visit to areas that face water logging problems/river fronts; providing proper drainage in the cropped field; and updating on regular weather. 

Besides, light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall were predicted over many places in other districts.
