In a significant development for education in the region, the Government High School in Tuensang town was upgraded to a higher secondary school by the Department of School Education (DoSE) on April 25, 2024. However, the school lacks required teachers and administrators.
Against this backdrop, the Chang Wedoshi Setshang (CWS), the apex student body of the Chang community, wrote to the Commissioner and Secretary of School Education on May 1for prompt assignment of a principal or vice principal, along with Post Graduate Teachers (PGTs) at GHSS Hakushang.
Admissions for the upcoming academic session 2024-25 have already commenced at GHSS Hakushang.
To address immediate needs, CWS officials have taken interim measures, including the setup of a new classroom. They have renovated the space and provided essential amenities such as desks, benches, fans, and whiteboards.
The decision to upgrade GHS Hakushang was greenlit during the District Planning and Development Board meeting on March 16, 2023, in Tuensang town.
However, despite this approval, the process was delayed with appeals by CWS to the Directorate of School Education remaining unanswered.
In this connection in 2023, the CWS issued an ultimatum to the Principal Director of the Directorate of School Education, Nagaland, demanding the establishment of a new GHSS in Tuensang town.
This demand stemmed from concerns over the existing schools’ inability to accommodate qualified students due to a lack of classrooms and a shortage of teachers.
Consequently, admissions for Class 11 were halted at GHSS Tuensang and GHSS Thangjam.
It’s worth noting that both schools have an intake capacity of 350 students, yet the number of applications exceeded 800 in 2023.
In their May 1, 2024 letter to the Commissioner and Secretary of School Education, Kohima, CWS expressed gratitude for the upgrade of Hakushang GHS to GHSS, while also highlighting the pressing need to address the challenges faced by the community.
“The appeals from the Chang community underscore the importance of addressing the educational needs of the region promptly,” it added.
