To decide on next course of action on expiry of 30-day ultimatum on Oting massacre
DIMAPUR, JAN 10 (NPN) : With the 30-day-ultimatum vis-à-vis justice to victims of the Oting massacre set to expire by January 10, Konyak Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) have convened an all-Konyak summit on January 14 to deliberate on the further course of action due to non-compliance with their charter of demands by the government.
This was decided at an emergency meeting of Konyak Union (KU), Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong (KNSK) and Konyak Students’ Union (KSU) held on Saturday.
In a joint statement Howing Konyak, Ponglem Konyak and Noklem Konyak, presidents of KU, KNSK and KSU respectively, disclosed that the meeting, while appreciating the State government for instituting a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the incident, also reminded about point number 1 & 2 in their charter of demands that-1. “All Officers and jawans involved in the killing of the 14 innocent lives should be booked under applicable civil court and -2. the action taken report must be brought before the public domain within 30 days.” The CSOs asserted that Konyaks would not rest till their demands were met.
The CSOs also endorsed the proposed walkathon by citizens on January 10 and also appealed to all concerned not to ignore “justice for Oting” demand while voicing out against the draconian Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA). The CSOs said any settlement without justice for Oting would be “injustice in itself”.
They also termed the presence of Indian Army camps in civilian territory as “totally an act of intrusion into civilian lives” and demanded that the Central government immediately remove the camps located with 10 km radius of towns and villages.
While acknowledging that Konyaks were “weeping for justice”, the meeting appealed to sections and element within their customary territories, not to ignite any situation that disturbed/disrupted the current flow. They declared that such acts would be considered as an attempt to distort the current flow as Konyaks fight for justice.
The meeting also declared that the resolutions adopted at the proposed all Konyak summit will be final and binding upon all. It was also decided that summit will declare the stance of the Konyaks regarding the December 4 and 5 incidents, which should be adhered by all citizens.
The CSOs said the proposed summit is to be attended by all nine Konyak legislators, presidents and secretaries of all KU units/branches, subordinating units of KSUs, KNSK along with its advisory board councils, Konyak Village Councils’ Union, Mon District GB & DB Union, Mon District VBD Association, Konyak Gazetted Officers’ Union (KGOU), Konyak Baptist Bumeinok Bangjum (KBBB), Konyak senior citizens, ex-parliamentariansand all ward presidents of Mon town.
They cautioned that those who fail to attend the proposed January 14 event without assigning any reason would be deemed as ignoring the grave issue of the Konyaks.
