The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came under stinging criticism at an Indian National Congress membership enrolment drive in Dimapur on March 15. The membership drive was organised by the Dimapur District Congress Committee, at the Congress Bhavan where the Working President of the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC), C Apok Jamir, accused the ruling party of trying to destroy the secular principles of the Indian Constitution. In the process, Jamir held that the safety and security of the minorities are increasingly coming under threat.
“Today, we are confronted with forces which are trying to destroy the very tenet of the Constitution by propagating policies and programmes which are in conflict with the interest of the people of India,” said Jamir, a former Rajya Sabha Member and a two-time MLA.
He accused the BJP government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, of making arbitrary decisions without consulting with other stakeholders. The result of such a leadership is manifest in Manipur, state torn apart by a two-year long ethnic conflict, he held. He added, “(They) have been very silent on this and have not taken any proactive measures to contain the problem.”
He further accused the BJP government in Assam of “indirectly” trying to subjugate a minority community by enacting a law “suppressing the propagation of one’s beliefs.”
As opposed to what he said was “a section of people” promoting a militant Hindutva ideology, he said that Hinduism is an inherently tolerant religion that propagates love and peace.
According to him, the Congress is the only party that can serve as a vanguard for protecting the interest of the Constitution, and of the people.
While stating that only the collective responsibility of the citizens can stop the forces inimical to the “fabric of our country,” he said that the enrolment drive was an opportune time to join and strengthen the movement for change.
He claimed that the enrolment drive was not for numbers but a movement to prick the conscience of the citizens to rise up to the challenges confronting the country today.
