Coal mining claims 4 lives in Mokokchung

Four miners died in a suspected gas poisoning inside a coal mine in Mokokchung district. As per a delayed report, the deaths occurred on March 16 in a coal mine located in between Mangkolemba sub-divisional headquarters and the Longnak valley.

Confirming the incident today, the Mokokchung police informed that it happened in a mine located on a steep hillside in the Atuphumi area on March 16, evening. The deceased victims (all male) were hired labourers.

Citing reports from the site of the incident, a police official told The Morung Express that it happened around 4:00-5:00 pm. “As per the report, three persons, who had gone in earlier in the day did not come out as expected. A fourth person went inside to check on the three. He also did not come out.”

By the time police and administration officials arrived at the site, the bodies were retrieved already.

Three of the deceased victims, identified as Babu Kachari, Sona Horang and Horang Oberang, hailed from Jorhat and the fourth, identified as Arans Limbu hailed from Golaghat.

It was informed that the Department of Geology and Mining has been informed of the incident, while a case of (death by) negligence was registered. Meanwhile, mining was temporarily suspended in the said location.
