Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio Thursday, inaugurated what was billed as the best equipped state-of-the-art Cardiac Care Centre (CCC) health care facility with the latest offerings in cardiac diagnostic and therapeutic services at Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research (CIHSR).

Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister said that the addition of the much-needed cardiac centre was a boost for the state’s healthcare service.
Rio said CCC with the state-of-the art healthcare facility in cardiac diagnostics and therapeutic services, would cater to not only people from Nagaland but also neighbouring states. He added that out of a total population of around 1.27 billion in the country, around 45 million were suffering from coronary artery disease.

The chief minister also lauded CIHSR as being one of the best hospitals in the State, if not across the entire North-eastern region. Rio noted that after the hospital (earlier called Referral Hospital) was handed over to CIHSR in 2005, it had grown by leaps and bounds in collaboration with Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore and Emmanuel Hospital Association (EHA) and the state government.

He also appreciated the entire CIHSR family for their outmost dedication and work towards serving the people of the State, especially during Covid-19 pandemic.

Rio advised CIHSR to provide training to government nurses and other medical staff on how to take proper care of patients and on hospital maintenance.

He further suggested the institute to carry out more tree plantations, maintain roads in good condition with proper drainage and grow hedges along the roads in the campus. He assured assistance from Road & Bridge and Forest departments in this regard.

The chief minister also urged upon CIHSR to establish a medical college, as many Nagas had to study medicine outside the State and even abroad.
In this regard, he cited the case of a few students studying medicine in Ukraine, who had to be evacuated due to the Russian-Ukraine conflict. He said “If CIHSR comes up with a medical College, it will be a huge relief for those wishing to pursue medical studies in our State”. He said it would not only benefit Nagaland, but also the neighbouring states.

He also informed that the State government was trying its best to start a medical college in Kohima and that though infrastructure development was not a problem, yet the project was still struggling with the management of the hospital.

CIHSR’s cardiologist Dr Avitso Leigise, who will head the centre, informed that the super-specialty unit is among the best equipped cardiac centre in North East with some of the latest equipment and interventional machine. The centre has a Catheterization lab for Angiogram and Angioplasty, pacemaker support, 2D and 4D echocardiogram, Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE)-EPIQ 7C, Cardiac Stress Testing, 24 and 48 hours Holter Monitoring etc.

He said that the latest interventional machine by Philips, a leading company in Cardiac Medical Imaging Technology, is among the best in the world.
Earlier, the programme was chaired by CIHSR medical superintendent Dr Clement Momin, while the institute’s current status and future plans were shared by its director Dr Sedevi Angami and vote of thanks was offered by CIHSR’s deputy director Dr Viu Meru.

The inauguration programme was also attended by ministers– Metsubo Jamir and V. KhashihoSangtam, advisors– Dr Neikeisalie Nicky Kire and TovihotoAyemi and adviser to chief minister and former commissioner & secretary health department, Menukhol John.
