Rain water harvest tank project launched in Gariphema village

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio today launched a rain water harvest tank project at Gariphema village under Kohima district.

This project, having 2 lakh litres capacity, is funded by the 13th Finance Commission & MGNREGS 2014-16.

Speaking on the occasion, Rio stressed the need to have a proper water management system in the State. He encouraged the villagers to focus on proper storage of rain water to lessen the burden of the scarcity of water. Rio said that there are instances where too much rain causes floods while in other places there are severe drought but in Nagaland “we do not face such severe situation.”

In the olden days, he said, the people hardly bought water but in the present times water has become a precious component and many people have been spending lots of money on water.

Rio urged the people to make the best use of the water resources. Many villages in Nagaland, which usually situated on top of mountains, are in need of proper water supply, he said. “We need to look for good water sources to meet the challenge of the growing population,” he said. “We need to change our perspective now since times have changed,” Rio said.

Also speaking on the occasion, Er Hotovi Ayemi, Chief Engineer Water Resources Nagaland said that the launching of rain water harvest tank at Gariphema is one of the first of its kind in Nagaland. He informed that the department of Water Resources has identified avenues for providing roof top rain water harvesting structure at Gariphema.

Er Ayemi said that the department is presently constructing rain water harvesting structure for conservation and storage under NABARD funding. So far, it has identified 31 sites with six already completed.

He also informed the gathering that Jal Shakti Abhiyan campaign will be implemented till November 30, 2021.

He said the essence of the campaign lies in spreading awareness and implementation of the rain water harvesting system under the theme ‘Catch the Rain, where it falls, when it falls.

T Renben Lotha, Director Land Resources Nagaland highlighted the various form of water rain harvesting method, and spoke on naturally harvested method- Springshed management.

He maintained the Springsheds are getting exhausted with time which is a major concern to meet the demand and requirement of the people.

Further, he stressed the need to budget the water and revive the naturally available resources and bring a solution to the scarcity of water which would be an asset for the present and for the future.

The function was chaired by Vibeilietuo Kets, Chairman Gariphema Village Council.
