Chakhesang tribe celebrates 75 years of rechristening

Correspondent KOHIMA, JAN 10 (NPN): Chakhesang tribe celebrated their 75th anniversary of the community’s rechristening at Phek town under the aegis of Chakhesang Public Organisation (CPO) on Sunday.

The celebration was held on the theme “Recognize, Celebrate and Inspire.” It may be recalled that the Chakhesangs were earlier called ‘Eastern Angamis’ under the British administration before their nomenclature was changed to ‘Chakhesang’ in its present form in 1946.

Extending greetings to the Chakhesang community on the occasion, Minister of Planning & Coordination, Land Revenue and Parliamentary Affairs Neiba Kronu, who was the host of the event, urged the people to forgive and forget the past mistakes, if any, and march ahead for the society’s progress. Dwelling on developmental activities in Phek district, Kronu suggested that villages located on the highway and touched by the road project were fortunate and should be considered as “benefitted villages” and not as “affected villages”.

Appealing to the community to extend support and co operation to the State government and implementing agencies of various developmental projects, the minister advocated doing away with the practice of registering complaints hampering smooth execution of the works. As compensation amount involved huge sums of money, he advised that the people receiving compensation to invest the money wisely, while advocating money circulation within the community.

He urged the Chakhesang community to strengthen the CPO resolution on protection and conservation of forest and wildlife within its jurisdiction.

In this regard, Kronu offered Rs 2 lakh to CPO for undertaking proper mechanism and strict implementation of the restriction on burning of jungles and killing of wild animals.

The minister assured a corpus fund of Rs 10 lakh towards market linkages in the agriculture sector.

Kronu also encouraged the people to give more efforts towards large scale production to boost rural economy. He also said the corpus fund would facilitate transportation of agricultural produce and enable the farmers to sell their produces in proper marketing sheds at Kohima and Dimapur.

He also released a souvenir and book on customary laws published by CPO.

Also speaking on the occasion as guest speaker, Rajya Sabha member KG Kenye acknowledged the efforts of the Chakhesang community in marching ahead on the path of progress, which he said was highly commendable.

Henceforth, he suggested that the community should zealously safeguard and protect the collective interest against any internal dissent or external incitement.

Kenye said safeguarding unique customary laws should be the renewed vision of the community as they are the core issues directly affecting lives, which must not be compromised under any circumstances.

Legislators Chotisuh Sazo and Kezhienyi Khalo also spoke at the gathering.

Presidents of Angami Public Organisation, Sumi Hoho and Pochury Hoho also extended greetings to the people.

CPO president Mikha Kenye delivered the presidential address while MLA Kuzholuzo Nienu delivered welcome address.

The act of blessing was pronounced by Rev Dr VK Nuh.

Several tribal hoho leaders also present on the occasion. The celebration concluded with the adoption of a six-point resolution.
