State proposes small landing strips in all dists

Spl. Correspondent NEW DELHI, NOV 19 (NPN) :Nagaland minister of civil aviation, transport, railways and land resources, P. Paiwang Konyak Thursday disclosed that the Central government has agreed to the proposed greenfield airport project at Chiethu including the water aerodrome project at Doyang water reservoir.

Paiwang informed Nagaland Post that union minister of civil aviation Jyotiraditya Scindia had “agreed” to positively take up the projects in Nagaland at the earliest. Paiwang also said that the state government was leaving no stone unturned to ensure that the pet project it had proposed since 2003 did materialize. It may also be mentioned that former chief minister T.R. Zeliang whose government had also proposed another green field project at Ruzaphema, claimed that it was proposed since 2000.

The state government had already purchased a land measuring an area of 1013.72 acres, at Chiethu which was ready to be transferred to Airport Authority of India. The ministry of civil aviation had hired M/s Creative Group, an AAI empanelled firm to prepare a DPR.

Paiwang said Kohima was the only state capital in India that did not have an airport despite the National Policy that every state capital should have an airport. He also said Chiethu airport was a commitment made by Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee while on a three-day visit to Kohima in 2003.

He expressed optimism that the ministry of civil aviation will expedite the process of finalization of the DPR upon its submission by the consultant and also sanction the necessary fund for early implementation.

Paiwang also disclosed that the state government had applied for aerodrome approval for the proposed greenfield airport from the Ministry of Defence. He said the defence ministry had conveyed “No Objection” on July 13, 2021 taking into consideration the strategic location from the national security point of view.

Water aerodrome: A Water aerodrome project has been identified to be taken up at Doyang hydro project for seaplane service under Regional Connectivity Scheme- Ude Desh Ka Aam Naagrik (RCS-UDAN). Paiwang said this project was accepted by the union minister. He therefore, urged the ministry to depute multi-disciplinary team for undertaking techno-feasibility study of the proposed site.

Small landing strips: The state government has also proposed for construction of small landing strips for inter-district connectivity. The state has proposed construction of small landing strips in all the 12 districts at Rs. 7.50 crore per district.
