GUWAHATI, OCT 4 (PTI/AGENCIES) : Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday said the that the Centre is focused on promoting all-round development of the North East and various progressive measures taken by it will help the region to scale higher peaks of progress and development.
Naidu, who will be touring the North Eastern states this week, was addressing a gathering at an event at Guwahati after presenting the “Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi Award for National Integration and Contribution” to eminent writer and scholar Nirode Kumar Barooah, members of Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Trust and members of the Shillong Chamber Choir.
Paying tribute to freedom fighter and the first chief minister of Assam Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi, Naidu said he was one of the makers of modern India.
Naidu also inaugurated the first-of-its-kind PET-MRI wing in the North East and the fourth to be installed at a government hospital in the country at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital. The machine, set up at a cost of Rs 62 crore, works faster than PET-CT and is essential for advanced cancer research activities.
“As initiatives over the past seven-and-a-half years reveal, development, peace and prosperity have been the top priorities for the central government,” he said.
To drive home the point, he cited the example of the historic Karbi Anglong Agreement to end the decades-old crisis ensuring Assam’s territorial integrity, a statement from the VP’s secretariat said. Assam governor Jagdish Mukhi, chief minister Himanta Sarma and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
Naidu to arrive Nagaland on 3-day visit
DIMAPUR, OCT 3 (NPN): Vice President of India, M Venkaiah Naidu is scheduled to arrive Nagaland on a three-day visit starting October 7.
During his stay, Naidu is expected to visit the World War II cemetery Kohima, hold interaction with Pfuchama villagers and students. He is expected to visit Ruzazho village in Phek and also hold interactive session with student toppers and national and state teachers’ award winners in Kohima besides interacting with Nagaland University officials, ICAR, NIT etc. Officials said that preparations were on to welcome the vice president. Security will be beefed up and traffic regulations will be put in place during his visit.
Imphal Correspondent adds: Vice President Naidu is scheduled to arrive Imphal on October 5 and will be attending the inaugural function of a seminar on “Bioeconomy from Bioresources of North Eastern Region of India” to be hosted by IBSD and also inaugurate the Phytopharmaceutical lab of IBSD. Police have intensified security and preventive measures for the upcoming visit as cordon and search operations were carried across Imphal city.
