Carl Rogers Institute of Mental Health & School Counselling in Kohima opens

Carl Rogers Institute of Mental Health & School Counselling (CRIMHSC) was formally inaugurated at P Khel, Kohima village, opposite Don Bosco College, Kohima on October 3. 

Nagaland Higher Education & Tribal Affairs Minister, Temjen Imna Along maintained that the establishment of this institute will determine the lives of many people in the state. The young people are in need of professional counselling, professional mentorship and guidance in this fast pace of professional life, said Along in his virtual address of the inaugural function.

“I am sure that this institute will play a pivotal role in nurturing mental health and making people ready to face the various challenges of life with positivity,” he said.

The Minister was optimistic that many aspects of mental, physical and counseling to be addressed by the institute on professional note, “will ultimately result prosperity of our state and our people.”

Also stating that this institute have been started with a vision for the people, the minister hoped that the institute would do justice to mould young minds- not only to be literate but also to be educated by showing the path of stronger career and proper career counselling.

Further, Along stressed on the need to motivate the youngsters to take bold steps in social entrepreneurship, and also encourage them to build a prosperous Nagaland.
 
‘Torch bearer for Naga people’
Also speaking on the occasion, Neivor Rutsa, Vice President, Angami Public Organization (APO) hoped that this Institute would facilitate those people who are in need of help and advice.

Stating since all parents are not literate, he hoped that this Institute will be a parent to those people, regardless of status and background. “Let this institution be a guardian and inspiration to each and every students, particularly, younger generation and also ageing parents who are in need of comfort; Let this institution be a torch bearer and guiding force for our Naga people,” Rutsa implored.

“For the child to do well academically, it is so important that the child is also mentally and physically in a good shape,” said T Sekhose, Former Director, SCERT Nagaland.

For a child to excel in his/her study, it is so important that this mental health is also addressed, Sekhose said.

The programme was chaired by CRIMHSC secretary Vetalü Nyekha while CRIMHSC vice chairman Kezhazolie Cornelius Mere delivered welcome address. Students of Psy Dept, Don Bosco College Kohima presented a special number.

Rev. Fr C Joseph, Counsellor, St. Joseph College Jakhama and Rev Dr Kevekhalo Lasuh, senior pastor, Chakhesang Baptist Church, Kohima prayed for the programme. Vote of thanks was proposed by CRIMHSC secretary Thelu Pohena.
 
Vision of CRIMHSC 
The vision of CRIMHSC is to provide mental health and counselling services to all categories of students so as to cater to the needs of mental health and emotional wellbeing.

CRIMHSC Chairman, Dr Zavise Rume said the primary objective of the CRIMHSC is to provide counselling services according to the new approaches propounded by Carl Rogers, to provide a common platform for counsellors across the world and to promote healthy interactions, share resources.

In term of services, it would provide counselling services to students, teachers, parents, to train teachers, parents to become good counsellors, to provide a common platform for interactions through seminar, workshop, virtual webinar, orientation, force and to provide space for counsellors to proactive Carl Rogers method of counselling to cater to the needs of the mental emotional well beings of students.

“We hope to create many more Carl Rogers institute in India,” Dr Rume said adding “From today, we will start appealing counsellors communities across the world and India to join us.”

Dr Rume and Kezhazolie Mere founded this Institute. “We conceptualized and found this Institute to practice and promote counselling according to the principles of non-directive, person-centred approach to counselling founded by Carl Rogers which has revolutionized the modern concept of counselling.”

 Career talk: The Institute will talk about specific career prospects in a smaller group and to create awareness about various career opportunities. 

Career conference: It is organized with a large number of students as target participants of the conference.

Professionals from different fields will be invited as guest speakers for the conference where the students will be given ample time to interact with the professionals for their feedbacks.

 Family and marriage therapy: To enable and empower couples and families with different skills found necessary for the family members to resolve presenting conflicts and to improve the relationship and the family unit as a whole.

Couple therapy: Couple therapy is conducted for couples who are in a relationship married or not, to improve relationship and help couples resolve different issues by empowering them with different skills. Pre-marital counselling and Post-marital counselling services will be available for couples. 

Child counselling: A therapeutic intervention to help children with emotional issues and problem behaviour
Holistic counselling: An integrative approach grounded in psycho thesis that focuses on the relationship between mind, body and spirit. 

Addition counselling: In addiction counselling, the counsellor will typically assess and evaluate clients mental and physical health, addiction or problem behaviour, and their readiness to treatment in a group setting therapy.
