Book on factors leading to alcoholism among Naga youth released in Wokha

A book titled ‘An Analysis of the Factors Influencing Naga Youth to Alcoholism: Christian Response,’ authored by K. Echongbemo Shitiri was officially launched today on July 21 at Samyan Baptist Church, Wokha. The book was dedicated and released by Rev. N Longshi Kithan, Pastor Samyan Baptist Church.

The book delves into the pressing issue of alcoholism among the youths, offering an in-depth analysis and proposing preventive measures from Christian perspective as a solution.

Shitiri has done his schooling in Mount Sinai School, Wokha; passed his matriculation in 2000; and passed out class 12 at Mountain View Christian College Kohima. He did his BA at Patkai Christian College Autonomous in 2008. He started his theological journey and joined Baptist Theological College Pfutsero for his BD degree and graduated in the October 2008- May 2012.

After his BD, he join pastoral ministry at Chukitong Baptist Church from September 9, 2012 to February 2022. At present he is serving as Pastoral Ministry at Samyan Baptist Church, Vungoju Colony, Wokha.

During the launch, the author K. Echongbemo Shitiri highlighted that alcoholism is one of the most prevalent issues confronting humanity today, having claimed many lives and caused significant harm. He stated that alcoholism has become a threatening factor to individuals, families, the church, and society, resulting in economic hardship for families and disrupting social harmony. He expressed hope and belief that this book will help the youth and younger generation who are involved with alcohol to stop drinking and understand its effects.

He added, “Our youth are our future, and it is our duty to guide them towards a healthier, more fulfilling life. Through this book, I hope to ignite meaningful conversations and actions that will lead to positive change.”

Tsumomgo Ovung, NCS retd, in his speech congratulated Shitiri on the successful publication of his book. Ovung commended the author for his dedication in highlighting the importance of such scholarly works in addressing societal issues. “This book is a testament to the author commitment to understanding and resolving the challenges faced by our youth. His insights and recommendations will undoubtedly serve as a guiding light for many,” remarked Ovung.

He also stressed the need for community involvement in combating alcoholism.  “We must all come together to address this issue. It is not just the responsibility of the affected families, but of the entire community,” he added.

A brief insight of the book
The study explores the growing problem of alcoholism among young people, particularly in Wokha Town, delving into the multifaceted causes of youth alcoholism, including family dynamics, peer pressure, unemployment, and early exposure to alcohol. It highlights the severe impacts of these factors on family economics and social harmony.

The study aims to shed light on the urgent need for preventive measures, especially from a Christian perspective.

The research employs a dual methodology such as an empirical approach involving questionnaires and interviews with both alcoholics and Christian leaders, alongside a review of relevant literature. Focusing on youths aged 12-40 in urban settings, the book provides valuable insights and recommendations for both church ministries and future educational research.

Divided into four chapters, the book covers on Definitions and biblical perspectives on alcohol, Analysis of the factors contributing to youth drug and alcohol abuse, The effects of alcoholism on individuals and communities and Christian responses and preventive measures.
