Governor of Nagaland, La Ganesan on Friday called on the graduates of St Joseph University (SJU) to be prepared to “roll up your sleeves” and tackle the manifold problems plaguing our society which require sincere efforts to resolve them. Addressing the SJU graduates during its 2nd convocation as chief guest, the governor said that the test of real education begins after you leave the university and face the real world on your own.

Congratulating the students, Ganesan said that the day is a defining moment as they step into their next stage of life.

There are enormous challenges and opportunities waiting for you in the outside world and you will have to face them and work with unwavering dedication to make your contribution for self-development and for the betterment of the society, he stated. Ganesan also cited examples of Indian youths who have excelled in various fields, both in the national and international fields, in the hope that it draws inspiration for the graduates to excel beyond one’s borders in different fields of human endeavours.

Maintaining that the present society demands much more from today’s youth than it was ten years ago, he said students will have to start taking crucial life decisions, and while there are many thumb rules to living, the governor asserted that there is no laid down rules for success, except hard work, planning and execution.

While acknowledging the sacrifices each student has made to earn a degree, he also asked the students to recognise the efforts of their families who have supported them in their journey. The opportunity to pursue higher education rarely comes without a cost to the student’s family – whether that cost is financial, or it involves sacrifices of time, or the accumulation of responsibilities that allow the learner to focus on studies.

The governor also expressed delight to be in the university, which in just six years has already made impact in the arena of higher and technical education, as an institution providing quality education for the State and beyond. He acknowledged the ‘talented and robust faculties’ from different parts of the country which the university has been able to build within a short period of time.

Delivering the keynote address, Rev Dr James Thoppil, Bishop of Kohima Diocese & Pro-Chancellor of SJU, said that the institute and all its stakeholders are creating history today.

He deemed it as a realization of a dream for the Catholic Church in Nagaland to provide value based, job-oriented and professional education where “our own people” will find new avenues and possibilities for a career that is creative, fulfilling, value-centered and innovative.

Its core dream also included providing an opportunity for higher education for the youth who are unable to afford to venture outside the State. He maintained that the Catholic church in Nagaland has been promoting quality education at the cheapest level spreading even to the remotest part of the State, and acknowledged God’s grace and sheer providence that they are here, today.

Stating that every convocation marks the outcome of years of commitment, hard work and perseverance, he said that this 2nd convocation of the SJU is a testament to it and has come to stay in the field of higher education in the regional, national and international scene as well.

“Today, our new graduates will venture out to witness and prove their abilities. I must say, “go with strong conviction to bring about changes in the society by infusing values of the gospel and create an unmatched peace and development wherever you are.”

A total of 888 students graduated today from 20 different disciplines which include Under Graduates – 16 gold and 16 silver medalists respectively. Post Graduates – 15 gold and 15 silver medalists and two doctoral degrees.
