Staff Reporter DIMAPUR, OCT 10 (NPN) : Ao Students Union Diphupar (ASUD), launched a face mask campaign here, at Ao Baptist Church Church, Diphupar on Saturday.
Addressing the gathering as special guest, minister, PWD (housing and mechanical), Tongpang Ozüküm said that ASUD since its inception had been active and progressive. He congratulated them for initiating the event and stated that the campaign would not only benefit Nagas in general but also create more awareness among Nagas to stay protected.
Tongpang said that the first wave of the pandemic did not affect Nagas as much compared to other states, as the people took the pandemic seriously and were careful.
He however pointed that Nagas took the second wave lightly and that the death toll was much higher.
The minister informed that the medical team recorded a total of 654 deaths on the second wave in which 99% were not vaccinated.
In this regard, he appealed to the people that in addition to maintaining SOPs, the most important was vaccination.
He pointed out that Nagas were good at defending rights stressing on Article 19 (freedom of speech) and Article 21 (personal liberty), however they forget about their duties. He stated that when one reads about Article 19 and 21, one simultaneously read Section 269 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
While stating that no one could be forced to get vaccinated, Tongpang said that one should also understand the importance of getting vaccinated. Stressing on the Naga political issue, he said that the spirit on the part of the government of India and Naga political negotiators was different now.
He added that the state government after forming the opposition-less government had come together and united.
The minister informed that talks would begin and was hopeful that Nagas would see a solution very soon.
Earlier, the programme was chaired by Arenla Imsong and invocation was said by pastor, ABCD, N Lipok Jamir.
Exhortation was delivered by president, Diphupar Ao Senso Telongjem, T Maong Aier, welcome speech by president, ASUD, Imnayanger Jamir and duet by Chubamenla and Nayangben Lkr.
Prizes were also distributed for “eating and cycling competition”. Youth Ministry, ABCD, associate pastor, Talimoa Jamir said the benediction. It may be mentioned that ASUD would be distributing face masks at five strategic locations across Dimapur.
