ANPSA unit urges NBSE to have common calendar

Staff Reporter DIMAPUR, JUL 24 (NPN) : All Nagaland Private Schools’ Association (ANPSA) Dimapur unit has appealed to the Nagaland Board of Secondary Education (NBSE) to have a common academic calendar for all examinations and not just for selected classes.

Pointing out that almost 90 percent of State boards across India were following the norms and culture of Central Board of School Education (CBSE), association’s president Dr Andrew Ahoto wondered why NBSE was still lagging behind.

Calling for a common academic calendar on a par with the national board, he stressed that common calendar would help students get more opportunities as most major exams like Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), etc, were based on CBSE exam schedules.

“Why two separate periods of examination from the same board? Nagaland Board of Secondary Education should also follow like the national board for the benefit of the students,” he said.

Ahoto said the academic year of Central Board of School Education starts from April and ends in March the following year, adding that overall pass percentage of CBSE too was much higher compared with NBSE.

Critical of the marking system of Nagaland Board of Secondary Education, Ahoto said that Naga students were getting less marks because of “stringent and less marking” system.

“Less marking system by NBSE is also one reason why many Naga students cannot get into universities like Delhi University and Jawaharlal University,” he claimed.

Maintaining that CBSE was more student-friendly compared to NBSE, he wondered why good marks could not be awarded to meritorious Nagas students to enable to get into better colleges.

Ahoto also asked why NBSE had barred HSLC students from appearing for compartmental exams.

He insisted that compartmental exams should be held and questioned how the board could change the rule overnight. He, therefore, urged the students to fight for this.

It may be mentioned that NBSE had on July 22 in a press release signed by its secretary Rangumbuing Nsarangbe informed the students that the board would not be conducting compartmental exams.
