The Fire and Emergency Services personnel in Dimapur remained on their toes for the third consecutive day as the city reported another fire incident on January 3.

Following the fire incidents on January 1 and 2 at K Kire colony, Kuda village, and Naharbari, there was another in Lhomithi colony on January 3. The fire engulfed a residential compound housing as many as 12 families, near the Pranabanda Women’s College.

Atleast three LPG cylinders exploded. Fortunately, there was no report of any human casualty. Firefighters had to battle for over 1 hour to control the flames, the cause of which was still to be established.

According to the Fire Station (West), it dispatched two fire trucks immediately after it was alerted of the fire at 12:48 pm. Two more were requisitioned from the Fire Station (Central).

The houses razed included an Assam-type house and others built of bricks and bamboo.

Tardy response is often the allegation against the Fire and Emergency Services. But firefighters strongly disagree. One firefighter told The Morung Express that they respond to any fire alert immediately. Contrary to allegation, he pointed to
Dimapur’s notorious traffic congestion and obstruction by onlookers as two of the biggest challenges in times of fire. According to him, more often than not, fire trucks get stuck on narrow roads where there is little to no room for ordinary vehicles to give way, while onsite onlookers and their haphazardly parked vehicles further come in the way of accessibility to fire sites.

“Otherwise, we are on the alert round the clock and respond to any (distress) call immediately,” he said.
