The All Nagaland Adhoc Teachers’ Group (ANATG) has upped the ante, upgrading from a silent mode of protest to a more assertive indefinite hunger strike.  The decision to shift gear was taken on September 29, the fourth day of the initial silent protest, which was being staged at the Naga Solidarity Park, Kohima, following alleged “silent treatment” by the government.

“We are utterly dismayed by the attitude of the officials. Even after four long days of silent protest, there was no sign (from the government) reaching out to us,” said ANATG spokesperson, Bendangtemsu Ozukum. According to him, 73 ANATG members have volunteered for the indefinite hunger strike.

Ozukum further disclosed that the All Nagaland School Teachers Association (ANSTA) has also met the Commissioner & Secretary, School Education at the Secretariat with no positive outcome. Commenting on the outcome of the meeting, he expressed displeasure that the School Education officials reportedly suggesting that the agitating teachers should “come and tell them (government) how our service can be regularized.”

While reminding that the 2018 agitation, which was suspended can be reactivated anytime, he said that the hunger strike was necessitated because they have waited long enough. He further asserted that there will be no negotiation except service regularisation of the members.
