Amend Municipal Act before holding ULB polls, says AKMWP

Association of Kohima Municipal Wards Panchayat (AKMWP) on Friday called for rectifying/amendment of the Nagaland Municipal Act before holding the Urban Local Body (ULB) elections.

AKMWP president Thejao Sekhose said this while speaking at a programme in connection with donation of 200 chairs and 10 tables by 1st Assam Rifles (AR) to Officers’ Hill (Thegabakha) Colony Panchayat here on Friday.
Accusing the State government of not consulting the stakeholders before adopting the Municipal Act, Thejao said the Act was a copy of a similar Act in Gujarat and required modification as it infringed Article 371(A) of the Constitution.

While clarifying that they were not against holding the ULB polls, Thejao maintained that the Act was based on mainland India and some of its provisions were against Naga culture.

He said Dimapur Urban Council Chairmen Federation, All Ward Union Mokokchung Town and AKMWP had earlier jointly urged the government to hold the ULB elections instead of having advisory bodies. He informed that a meeting with all 19 wards would be held in the coming days to deliberate on the issue. NPF legislator Keneizhakho Nakhro, who was also present, thanked 1st AR for providing the materials and hoped for such goodwill gesture even in the future.

Officers’ Hill Colony Council chairman Khrielakuo Sekhose expressed gratitude to the AR for providing the much-needed furniture for the community hall and said that the contribution would benefit the people.
Short speeches were delivered by 1st AR commandant Col Umesh Sati and OHCC adviser and former chief secretary Lalthara.

The programme was chaired by OHCC general secretary Alemwapang Ao while invocation was delivered by Kohima Ao Baptist Arogo pastor SN Among Jamir and vote of thanks by OHCC assistant general secretary OHCC Shepo Hiesuh.
