The Nagaland chapter of the National People’s Party (NPP) has been rocked by what is apparently a revolt by party workers. On the heels of “mass resignation” by top state NPP leaders, the party’s state President, Dr Andrew Ahoto Sema told a press conference today that “what we saw yesterday, it shouldn’t have happened. But it doesn’t matter, every people have the right to speak on whatever they want to.”
Taking into context the claim that 80% of the party had resigned yesterday, Dr Andrew stated that the “handful of members do not even comprise 2%” of the total party strength. “What they claim of 80% is a big joke,” he stated, implying “we have all the records of every rank and file in principle, we know all the members across our State.”
His claim was preceded by a press statement from the NPP, issued on June 28 evening. The dissenters, at the press conference on June 28, had cited “lack of political consultations” and acting contrary to the party constitution by their state President as the basis of the “mass resignation.”
Limanuksung Longkumer, General Secretary (Org) said, “On many occasions, our state leader has acted contrary to our (party) constitution, which is not acceptable for us.”
He further said that they were not resigning to join any political party. “On our part we have never acted above the party constitution. Under the provisions of the constitution we have asked the Central leadership to address these issues. However, since we did not get any kind of complete solutions, we have decided that it is time for us to move,” Longkumer had said.
“The tall claim that they made is actually quite a mockery on themselves. If they wanted to walk out, they could have walked out in a peaceful manner,” said Dr Andrew.
He told the media fraternity that the dissident groups were sooner or later going to be suspended from the party “due to numerous anti-party activities which they had been carrying out.”
“It’s easy to despite what you cannot get. These members were actually hovering for the past one year to deteriorate and disturb our party and wanted to take the position of the president’s chair,” he stated.
He stated that they were actually going behind the party and having signature campaigns across every district, with ‘only three or four districts’ with them where ‘these districts also had no members.’
Dr Andrew also clarified that the Nagaland has a well established party constitution and ideology to which every party functionary conducts oneself. “No one is above the party and its ethics, however this dissident group had used all kinds of negative tactics to bring disrepute to the name and good public standing of the party,” he stated.
Stating that this will not hamper the party, he added, “In fact it will now go on a clean slate. The beauty of NPP is that we waited for them to reconcile, but inspite of all that, they tried to take the wrong step of defaming the party.”
Advisor NPP Nagaland, Deo Nukhu also said that the resignation cannot be termed a ‘mass resignation’ when the vast majority is still with the party. He stated that the party is intact and that it will be seeing new faces in the coming State Assembly elections to be held in 2023.
“We are very confident that we will be going all out in the coming elections,” National Secretary, NPP Sushil Huidrom told the media fraternity. “We are hoping that we will be able to do the best. I can say with confidence that the people’s trust rests on NPP as many new energetic and dynamic people are joining the party day by day,” he added.
