Kohima, December 7 (MExN): The Public Works Department (PWD), Roads & Bridges, Nagaland, has acknowledged the concerns raised regarding the state of road infrastructure across the state.
In a press release issued on December 6, the department stated that it “deeply values feedback from citizens, as it motivates us to improve and strengthen our efforts toward building and maintaining better road networks that serve the needs of the people.”
The reaction from the PWD came subsequent to The Morung Express publishing a special front page edition, on December 6, critically reviewing the condition of roads in the state.
The PWD highlighted the significant challenges posed by the state’s geographically diverse terrain, hilly topography, and prolonged monsoon season, which has compounded road maintenance issues. Despite these difficulties, the department reiterated its commitment to addressing these challenges “comprehensively and systematically.”
The department noted that heavy and sustained rainfall this year caused significant wear and tear on road surfaces, erosion, and landslides, leading to delays in repair works. However, it assured citizens that as weather conditions have stabilized, repair and rehabilitation works have resumed across the state.
“The safety of citizens remains our utmost priority,” the department emphasized, adding that ongoing work includes addressing potholes, uneven surfaces, drainage improvements, and implementing road safety measures.
It informed that major repair projects are underway across all districts, with divisional offices instructed to prioritize roads based on usage, safety concerns, and the urgency of repairs. The PWD stated that “regular monitoring and quality checks are being conducted to ensure durable results.” Additionally, the department is coordinating with sister departments to ensure that overlapping jurisdictions or resource constraints do not hinder progress.
Update on Foothill Roads
The Foothill Roads project, described as “critical for connectivity and economic growth,” has faced delays due to procedural requirements. However, the department announced that the tendering process for the project has been completed, and work orders will be issued as soon as formalities are finalized. “This project remains a top priority, and we are committed to completing it within the stipulated timeline,” the statement said.
The department also commended citizens and communities for their proactive efforts in addressing immediate road repair needs, while reiterating that the primary responsibility for road infrastructure lies with the government. “We encourage citizens to continue engaging with the department through feedback, suggestions, and collaborative initiatives. Public participation is vital to ensure that our efforts are aligned with the needs of the community,” the PWD stated.
Hornbill Festival Preparations
Addressing concerns that repairs might be rushed due to the ongoing Hornbill Festival, the department reassured that the influx of visitors has not detracted from long-term goals. While some repairs were expedited for festival-related traffic, the PWD maintained that its overall focus remains on delivering sustainable improvements to benefit residents year-round.
The department reaffirmed its commitment to improving road infrastructure, which it described as essential for fostering economic growth, ensuring public safety, and enhancing the quality of life. “We reiterate our commitment to addressing these issues with renewed focus and determination,” it stated.
The PWD encouraged citizens to share their feedback and continue participating in collaborative efforts to ensure the state’s road infrastructure meets community needs.
