Peren, March 25 (MExN): Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) of Peren district held an emergency meeting at Jalukie town on March 24 in which a 5-point resolution was adopted.

In a joint press statement issued by the Nagaland Zeliang People Organization (NZPO), Zeliangrong Baudi Nagaland (ZBN) and the Zeme Council Nagaland (ZCN), the CSOs demanded immediate intervention of the Government of India (GoI) and Nagaland (GoN) following the March 22 incident which left three people dead and properties destroyed.

In the meeting, the Zeliangrong civil societies condemned the crime committed by the assailants allegedly armed with automatic weapons claiming protection of their ancestral land and killing 3 innocent villagers of Lamhainamdi village.

“The Government of Nagaland and the Government of India are urged to immediately arrest the perpetrating UG cadres and give severe befitting punishment in accordance to their crime as per the law of the land,” the release stated.

The CSOs further stated that Lamhainamdi village is established by their community in their own land with the consent of the landowner Lamhai village, and added that “no tribe has the authority to question the establishment of our own village.”

The meeting resolved to demand that the State government must implement in letter and spirit “the shifting of Kiyevi Village affected since 1979 with its present illegal settlers.” It also stated that the government should produce the Shifting Order for the knowledge of every citizen at the earliest.

The CSOs further resolved that the State government must evict all the ‘self styled’ unrecognised villages within the traditional boundary of Zeliang Naga bordering Chakhro Angami areas.

In the meeting, it was also resolved that no Underground designated camp will be allowed to be set up afresh within the traditional boundary of the Zeliang Nagas in Peren district.

Initiatives by the Indian government or State government or any other agencies in that direction will be taken as “an attack to the survivability of our tribe in the state of Nagaland,” the release asserted.

The CSOs mentioned that even on March 2, 2021, three villagers of Lamhainamdi village were abducted by a particular faction allegedly using police escort vehicle given to them by the State government for their personal security.

“It is very unfortunate that high ranking UG leaders, politicians and ministers are setting up self styled villages in Peren District bordering Dimapur Chakhro Angami areas using UG faction and their weapons for their selfish gains misleading even the innocent citizens,” the CSOs alleged.

The inaction of the Central and State government machineries in ensuring their right to ancestral property and the brazenness of the Naga political group is fomenting inter-tribal conflict, the CSOs claimed.

In this regard, the NZPO, ZBN and ZCN cautioned that the GoN and GoI “should act at the earliest otherwise the CSOs of Peren district should not be held responsible for any fall out of the status quo.”
