‘99% of court cases in Nagaland against government’

Kohima, May 22 (MExN): A staggering 99% court cases in the State are against government, Gauhati High Court Judge, & Executive Chairman, Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA) Justice Songkhupchung Serto stated today, observing that “our bureaucrats commit mistakes because of the lack of knowledge on the law.”

Justice Serto was addressing of students of Kohima Law College during an interaction programme in the college on May 21.

He further lamented that legislators were not introducing new laws, citing it as one of the reasons why the State of North-East have very less laws governing them, informed a press release issued by NSLSA, PRA, Ketholeno Neihu.

Minor changes to the law were made only during emergencies or when situation arises, he added.

Justice Serto further maintained that if every administrators, bureaucrats, and legislators studies law for three years, they will become better at their profession as the ‘government is governed by the law.’

‘Law is dynamic, need continuous growth and subject to change to feed the need of the society,’ he added.

He opined Law is the ‘Science of Life, further elaborating that it gives, among others, a ‘person the way to live, to differentiate between the right and wrongs, one’s duties towards others and society and other’s duties towards us.’

Looking at the larger context, he pondered how law graduates such as Mahatma Gandhi, Nerhu or Dr BR Ambedkar etc made important contribution to the law of the country and described them as “conscience keepers of the nation.”

Accordingly, law is a subject everybody or anybody should study, Justice Serto said, adding that as a students, law as career option was limitless.

Explore beyond getting stuck with senior advocates or becoming law graduates, he exhorted.

The programme was chaired by Assistant Professor, Kezhokhoto Savi and Gauhati High court Registrar Neiko Akami and Joint Registrar Atoka Achumi also spoke during the programme.
