4th quarterly Lok Adalat in Nagaland resolves 77% cases, settles Rs 5.46 crore

KOHIMA, DECEMBER 15 (MExN): Nagaland joined the nation in observing the 4th Quarterly National Lok Adalat on December 14, resolving 354 out of 456 cases, achieving a strike rate of over 77% in a single day.

The People’s Court, under the aegis of the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA), also resulted in a cumulative financial settlement of Rs. 5,46,87,912, ensuring timely relief and justice for the litigants involved.

The proceedings took place across various districts in Nagaland with 11 benches, covering a wide range of disputes, including bank recovery cases, motor accident claims, and other matters.

The resolution of these cases highlights the effectiveness of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms in reducing the burden on the judiciary, the NSLSA underscored in a press release.

The Lok Adalat was held under the guidance of the Executive Chairman of NSLSA and Judge of the Gauhati High Court, Justice Manash Ranjan Pathak; Member Secretary of NSLSA Neiko Akami; and the Principal District & Sessions Judges (PD&SJ), Chief Judicial Magistrates (CJM), and Judicial Magistrates (First Class) serving as the presiding officers.

Meanwhile, at Rs 1, 80, 12,570, the highest financial settlement was recorded from Dimapur, where the District Legal Service Authority (DLSA) conducted the proceedings with Principal District & Sessions Judge cum Chairman Dimapur DLSA N Longshithung Ezung as the presiding officer. At the Dimapur Bench, 120 pre-litigation cases and 7 pending trial cases were taken up, and out of those, 85 cases were disposed of.

The second-highest settlement was recorded from Kiphire, where out of 58 bank loan recovery cases, 41 cases were disposed of, resulting in a financial settlement amount of Rs 53, 88,037. The Kiphire DLSA conducted the mobile Lok Adalat at Pungro Town, with CJM cum Secretary Kiphire DLSA Holika Sukhalu as the presiding officer, assisted by Panel Lawyer Lizi Sangtam and other Para-legal Volunteers (PLVs).

Mokokchung recorded a settlement amount of Rs 37, 79,725.04, the third-highest, where 18 bank recovery cases and 1 criminal compoundable offence case were taken up and disposed of. It was presided over by PD&SJ cum Chairperson Mokokchung DLSA Victo Sema, CJM cum Secretary Mokokchung DLSA Julian Sitlhou, Retainer Lawyer Watitemjen, and Panel Lawyer Mokokchung DLSA as the conciliators.

In Tuensang, 26 bank recovery cases were taken up, of which 12 were disposed of, resulting in a settlement amount of Rs 29, 10,400. PD&SJ cum Chairperson Tuensang DLSA Somet Chumden Chang presided over the proceedings, with Antimangyang Chang, Retainer Lawyer, and Herola, Panel Lawyer Tuensang DLSA, as the conciliators.

In the state capital, Kohima, 26 cases were taken up, and 23 were disposed of with a settlement amount of Rs 28, 86,010. The Kohima DLSA conducted the proceedings with CJM and Secretary Kohima DLSA, Wokono Yhoshü, as the presiding officer, assisted by 8 Panel Lawyers and 4 PLVs.

In Phek, 20 matters of pre-litigation bank recovery cases of SBI Phek and NStCB (Phek, Pfutsero, and Chozuba) were taken up and disposed of, with a settlement amount of Rs 20, 57,113. The proceedings at the District Court complex in Phek were presided over by PD&SJ cum Chairperson Phek DLSA Tucuno Vamuzo, with Vethothi Vero, Retainer Lawyer, and Sekhotso Rokha, Panel Lawyer Phek DLSA, as the conciliators.

Out of 7 pre-litigation bank recovery cases in Zunheboto, 6 were disposed of, with a total settlement amount of Rs 15, 35,797. PD&SJ cum Chairman ZDLSA Phuleto Yeptho presided over the proceedings held at the District Court Complex in Zunheboto, with Retainer and Panel Lawyers Easter H Yepthomi and Inolito K Sumi as the conciliators.

All 9 cases taken up in Longleng were disposed of, with a settlement amount of Rs 13, 88,824. CJM cum Secretary Kumdilong Kessen presided over the NLA, with Panel Lawyer P Monyei Phom as the conciliator.

At the District Court in Mon, the proceedings were presided over by CJM cum Secretary Mon DLSA B. Peter, with Panel Lawyers Angun Konyak, N Mannon, K Topha, and M Moba as the conciliators. A total of 5 pre-litigation bank recovery cases were taken up, and 4 were disposed of, involving a financial settlement worth Rs 11, 07,293.

The settlement amount in Wokha stood at Rs 10, 68,467, where 13 cases comprising 10 pre-litigation bank recovery cases and 3 pending trial bank recovery cases were taken up and disposed of. The Lok Adalat was conducted at the District Court Complex in Wokha, with JM (First Class) cum Secretary Wokha DLSA Cheliam Khiamniungan as the presiding officer, assisted by Panel Lawyers Jacob Kikon, Shanchobeni P Lotha, and Deputy Legal Aid Defense Counsel Renbonthung Tsanglao as conciliators.

In Peren, the Lok Adalat was conducted at the ADC Conference Hall in Peren Town with CJM cum Peren DLSA Secretary WV Patton, along with Retainer Lawyers Asungbe, Inchang, Italang, and Kidungyi as members. Seven pre-litigation cases were taken up and disposed of, with a settlement amount of Rs 8, 81,500.
