Nagaland notified 3,419 cases of Tuberculosis (TB) during the period from January to October 2024, according to data provided by the Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Anupriya Patel, in the Rajya Sabha on December 16.

Among the North-East states, the notification of cases was the second highest in Nagaland, after Assam, which reported 42,202 cases.

A total of 93 TB-related deaths were recorded during January to October, as per MoHFW data based on Ni-Kshay, the web-enabled patient management system for TB control under the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP).

Among the North-East states, Sikkim reported the lowest number of cases, with 1,122 and 33 deaths.

It may be noted here that that the Department of Health & Family Welfare, Nagaland, joined the rest of the country in launching the 100-Day Intensified Campaign on TB Elimination (Ni-Kshay Shivir) on December 7.

The initiative is part of India’s nationwide effort to eliminate tuberculosis (TB) by 2025, five years ahead of the global target set by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

During the same, Health Minister P Paiwang Konyak reaffirmed the state’s commitment to eliminating TB by 2025.

Running until March 2025, the campaign will focus on reducing stigma, raising awareness, and mobilizing communities to take an active role in fighting TB.

Earlier in March, during World TB Day, D Vezokholu Theyo, State TB Officer (NTEP), stated that Nagaland notified 4,284 TB cases in 2023 (86% of the allotted target of 5,000), resulting in notification rate was about 204 per lakh population.

She noted an increasing trend in TB case notifications, from 2,714 cases in 2017 to a peak of 4,845 cases in 2019, or 235 per lakh population in 2019.

Of all the TB cases notified in 2023 in Nagaland, Dimapur had the highest burden, comprising 48% of the total cases, with a notification rate of 508 per lakh population.

Longleng had the lowest burden, with only 1.14% of the total notified cases in Nagaland and a notification rate of 91 per lakh population.
Meanwhile, according to the World Health Organization’s Global TB Report 2024, cited by the MoS in the Rajya Sabha, the incidence rate of TB cases in India has declined from 200 per lakh population in 2021 to 195 per lakh population in 2023.

Ni-Kshay, which translates to “Ni=End, Kshay=TB,” is a system developed and maintained by the Central TB Division (CTD), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), in collaboration with the National Informatics Centre (NIC) and the WHO Country Office for India.
