3-day seminar on ‘legal profession’ commences

DIMAPUR , October 21: A three-day seminar on “legal profession” for lawyers organised by the High Court Legal Services Committee in collaboration with the High Court Bar Association, Kohima Bench commenced Wednesday at the High Court premises.

In a press release, Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA) informed that while speaking at the seminar, Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench Judge Justice Songkhupchung Serto said the profession was challenging during the “foundational years especially pertaining to making an income out of it”.

Narrating his experiences during the initial years of practicing under a senior, Serto said the amount of hard work put into catching up with the profession and the payment received in return was “meagre”. However, he said the passion to learn and struggle was key to producing refined lawyers.

The Judge was also of the view that charging fees in tribal communities was another challenge as the populace are “ignorant” of many subjects and procedure of law or courts.

Delivering a short speech, the newly appointed additional judge of the Gauhati High Court Kakheto Sema urged the bar fraternity to continue to assist the court for the dispensation of justice and promote the practice of rule of law so that the end of justice was promoted.

He also encouraged the upcoming lawyers to give time, effort, sincere and honest to achieve heights and limits of the profession.

During the two sessions, resource persons senior advocate Laximidhar Pangari of Odisha and Kolkata High Court delivered talks on Difference between Article 226 and 227 of the Constitution of India and service jurisprudence while senior advocate CT Jamir of Guahati High Court, Kohima Bench dwelled on professional ethics.

The sessions were chaired by High Court Bar Association, Kohima Bench, president A Zho.
