DIMAPUR, AUG 15 (NPN) : State Health & Family Welfare (H&FW) department on Saturday pointed out that unwillingness to test and late admissions in hospitals have cost many lives in the state as 99% of Covid-19 deaths were not fully vaccinated during the second wave (See table).
In its weekly bulletin, the department said that 40% of deaths (193 deaths) coming to hospitals in the second wave died within 24 hours of admission, signifying very late arrival with advanced symptoms.
It further said that 14 patients were brought dead to hospitals during the second wave while 31 deaths happened under home isolation.
The department said that keeping track of one’s health status will help in monitoring of danger signs and timely clinical interventions as ‘timing’ was everything in Covid-19 management. H&FW said that deaths can be avoided by seeking emergency hospital care on appearance of any danger signs immediately like– increasing fever, cough, shortness of breath /SPO2 less than 94% and also to regularly monitor symptoms and SPO2 by pulse oximeter.
H&FW pointed out that stigma around Covid-19, not wanting to test, waiting at home till worsening of symptoms, was proving to be very costly as most patients come to the hospital when there was little hope of survival.
Vaccination: While stressing on the need to get inoculated against Covid-19, H&FW at the same time reminded that full protection of the vaccine will be available only two weeks after the second dose. Second dose does not mean full vaccination until two weeks have passed, it said.
Weekly positivity: Though the state’s weekly sample positivity rate (WSPR) had come down to 5% in the past week, the department said that all districts, except Wokha, have shown a decline in weekly new cases.
As per the data (between Aug 7-13) Kohima’s WSPR stood at 9%, followed by Mokokchung and Wokha at 8% and Dimapur at 6%. Further, 591 cases and 12 deaths were reported from the week and 69 patients were admitted to a Covid-19 hospital.
State logs 61 fresh cases, 3 deaths: Nagaland on Saturday recorded 61 fresh Covid-19 positive cases and three more deaths.
Of the fresh cases, 34 were from Dimapur, 11 each in Kohima and Mokokchung, two in Peren and one each in Kiphire, Wokha and Zunheboto, taking the total caseload to 29097.
With three more deaths– two in Dimapur and one in Kohima, the death toll rose to 597.
