Nagaland’s Tourism and Art & Culture, Advisor, H Khehovi Yeputhomi today said that every effort will be made to celebrate the upcoming 23rd Hornbill Festival 2022 in a grand manner and sought the cooperation and support of all the tribal hohos and stakeholders.
“Hornbill Festival belongs to all Nagas and everyone has to contribute,” he said while addressing the coordination meeting with the tribal hohos at the Conference Hall of Directorate of Tourism, Kohima, for the upcoming festival.
Stating the policy behind the Hornbill Festival is to preserve and promote the Naga culture and traditions, he said “We are going to celebrate it in a grand manner this year.”
The Hornbill Festival of Nagaland is celebrated every year from December 1 to 10 at Naga Heritage village Kisama, about 10 kms away from Kohima.
Yeputhomi maintained that Hornbill Festival has gained international recognition since it started in 2000.
He requested the tribal hohos to start the renovation work of their respective tribal morungs at Kisama at the earliest, adding that Rs 1.50 lakh has been earmarked for each tribe for the purpose.
On request of the tribal hoho to facilitate toilet facility in every tribal morung, the Advisor said that the matter will be taken up with the urban department and PHED.
Equal treatment for both international & domestic tourists
As suggested by some tribal hohos, the Advisor assured that the department would give equal treatment to both international and domestic tourists to create a friendly tourist atmosphere for every visitor.
Yeputhomi said that the Plastic-free zone would apply this time too.
On emergence of food tourism, the need for respective tribal hohos to come up with menu booklet on food items was emphasized at the meeting, to tell the story behind it.
It also felt the need to place a tourist guide in each morung to apprise the visitors on the related tourist attraction spots and the rich culture and traditions of the respective tribes.
The respective tribal hohos have also been encouraged to showcase the handloom and handicraft products in their respective morungs.
Meanwhile, Additional Director for Tourism, Veyielo Doulo felt that efforts should be made not only to attract the attention of the tourists but to popularize the respective tribe’s identity and culture during the festival.
He informed that Southeast Asian countries have shown interest to be part of the festival this time.
Agreeing to the suggestion of the tribal hohos to place a caretaker in each morungs at Kisama to make Naga Heritage Village a year-round affair, the Advisor said that necessary guidelines would be notified by the department.

Tribal hohos from ENPO area abstain from meeting
Notably, tribal hohos from Eastern Nagaland area did not turned up for the coordination meeting today.
However, Yeputhomi said that the state government would meet and discuss with them, and expressed hope that good things would prevail.
