Dimapur, February 13 (MExN): As many as 168 cases out of 237 that were listed were disposed off during the National Lok Adalat in 11 District Headquarters of Nagaland on February 11.
The Lok Adalats collected settlement amount of Rs 5,39,97,434 in the form of fines, bank recoveries, motor accident claims, compensation money, etc, according to a press release from the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority.
As per the release, the sittings were headed by the District Judges, Chief Judicial Magistrate and Civil Judges acting as presiding officers. They were assisted by the Panel Lawyers serving as conciliators along with the Para Legal Volunteers who acted as members and facilitators.
The release stated that Lok Adalats have been given statutory status under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987.
Under the Act, the award (decision) made by the Lok Adalats is deemed to be a decree of a civil court and is final and binding on all parties and no further appeal against such an award lies before any court of law. Lok Adalat resolves and settles disputes by methods of direct talks between the litigants or parties amicably and it is an affordable and justice delivery is quick and effective.
NSLSA is the implementing Nodal Agency vested with the jurisdiction to organise and conduct National Lok Adalat (Peoples’ Court) under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, and it has been doing so at regular intervals for the benefit of citizens, the release stated.
Meanwhile, it also informed that the next National Lok Adalat is scheduled to be held on May 13. IN order to list matters/disputes in the next National Lok Adalat, citizens can contact the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority or approach the respective District Legal Services Authority which are attached to the District Court building in every district or contact the concerned Court for referring the case to the National Lok Adalat, it added.
