Late Shangwang Shangyung Khaplang’s nephew, 45 year old Yung Aung was on Friday elected as the new ‘acting chairman’ of the NSCN Khaplang.

While it was confirmed to The Naga Republic that a change of guard at the top did take place, nevertheless it was informed by a source that the outgoing Chairman Khango Konyak was never impeached or thrown out as reported earlier in the Times News Network (TNN) report.
Khango Konyak was ill for some time and was reportedly given safe passage. As earlier reported in TNN, the outfit had given Khango a safe passage to go wherever he likes without any harm. Khango reportedly left the NSCN (K) headquarters in Sagaing region of Myanmar with some of his loyalists.
The report in the TNN had stated that a coup had taken place and that Myanmar origin Naga members had thrown out the Indian-origin Chairman. The report had also pointed to “Indian intelligence agencies” seeing “this development as a blood less coup by Myanmar-origin Naga member of NSCN (K) to throw out an Indian-origin Naga leader”.
However it was learned that no such coup happened as reported and that two Konyak cabinet members as well as others from India side were still at Taga CHQ. It was alleged that the report of the coup was done ‘under Indian influence to create confusion’.
The Khaplang group decided on the change of leadership and a new chairman took over today, informed the source while adding that the NSCN K) was intact. There was however no official statement from the NSCN (K) to the developments.
Meanwhile 45 year old Yung Aung is a Post Graduate in Political Science from Manipur University and is from the Tangshang tribe. He was reportedly close to Khaplang and well trained in China, Pakistan and Bangladesh. He is also known to be an expert in martial arts and polo.
