About Nagaland State

905 Views No Comment

Nagaland is the only state in the Indian Union created out of a political agreement. The signing of the Sixteen Point Agreement in July 1960, though seen as controversial and leading to more division among the Naga people, nevertheless paved the way for the creation of Nagaland as the 16th state of the Indian Union on the 1st December 1963. The state was formed by merging the Tuensang Frontier Division of the North East Frontier Agency (NEFA) and the Naga Hills district of Assam.

Nagaland is bounded by Assam in the west, Myanmar on the East, Manipur in the south and Arunachal Pradesh and part of Assam on the north. It lies between 25° 6’ and 27° 4’ northern latitudes and between 93° 20’ and 95° 15’ eastern longitudes.

Present Nagaland is comparatively a small state with an area of 16,579 sq. km and a population of 1,978,502 as per the latest 2011 Census. Kohima is the state capital and Dimapur is known as the commercial capital and gateway to the rest of Nagaland and beyond. It has 11 administrative districts, 60 Assembly constituencies, one Lok Sabha seat and one Rajya Sabha seat.

Special provision under the Indian constitution for the state of Nagaland

The Constitution (Thirteenth Amendment) Act, 1962

Article 371A for the state of Nagaland provides that

“notwithstanding anything in this Constitution, no Act of Parliament in respect of:

·       Religious or social practices of Nagas

·       Naga customary law and procedure

·       Administration of civil and criminal justice involving decisions according to Naga customary law, and

·       Ownership and transfer of land and its resources,

… shall not apply to the State of Nagaland unless the Legislative Assembly

of Nagaland by a resolution so decides.”

Nagaland is a vibrant hill state with music and colour in the air. Consisting of 11 administrative districts, it is inhabited by 16 major tribes each having their own customs, dialects and attires. Life here is one long festival celebrated with pomp and gaiety.

Much as it is a place with a colourful heritage, Nagaland is blessed with picturesque landscape that represents unimaginable beauty, moulded perfectly for a breath-taking experience. You will feel the serenity, breathe the fragrance, taste the unique cuisine, explore exotic locales and enjoy warm hospitality.

How to get there

Dimapur is the gateway to Nagaland. It has both rail and air linkage with the rest of India. There are many connecting flights between Delhi and Kolkata (daily flights) and from there on to Dimapur.

One can also opt for the Rajdhani train between Delhi and Dimapur or the Shatabdi, BG express and Nagaland Express trains between Guwahati and Dimapur.

Kohima is about three hours’ drive from Dimapur. A number of taxis ply from Dimapur to Kohima. The Dimapur taxi stand is adjacent to the Railway Station. Yellow Taxis can be hired with other passengers (shared taxis) or exclusively (full taxis). A ‘full taxi’ could cost anything between Rs.1500 to Rs. 2000 for a one way trip to Kohima. A traveller can also opt to rent a car from Guwahati (through tour operators) and drive all the way to Kohima.

All important towns and villages are connected by the Naga State Transport (NST) services. It also operates a night deluxe service from Dimapur to Guwahati, Shillong, Mokokchung.
