NSF, ENSF indefinite protest from today

KOHIMA, OCT 11: Following the State Government’s alleged inaction on their demand to streamline Sarba Siksha Abhiyan and Rashtriya Madhyamik Siksha Abhiyan teachers of 2010 & 2013 batches into State Education Cadre, Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) and Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) have resolved to go ahead with their first phase of agitation– State-wide ban on movement of government-registered vehicles from October 12.

And this comes even after the State government’s assurance that it was doing its part and appealed to both the student unions to call off their proposed stir.

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, NSF president Ninoto Awomi said the ban would commence from 6 am onwards and enforced by volunteers by following COVID-19 SOPs.

He said keys of government-registered vehicles found moving during the ban would be taken away by the volunteers, while seized vehicles would be released only after the demands were met by the government. He added that the ban would be enforced for an indefinite period.

Mentioning that a meeting was held between NSF and ENSF leaders on Sunday following the government’s letter, Awomi informed the media that the House was not satisfied with the government’s response.

He said the meeting felt that the government would drag the issue indefinitely, hence leaders of both the organisations decided to go ahead with the first phase of agitation.

ENSF president Sepili L Sangtam regretted that even after lapse of the 30-day ultimatum and another 10 days, the government failed to act on their demand. He said the two student bodies were not satisfied with the government’s assurance and appeal.

Meanwhile, police, administration, medical and fire & emergency services have been exempted from the purview of the agitation.

Student bodies back bandh: Responding to the call of the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) to impose indefinite restriction on movement of government registered vehicles (NL 10 and NL 11) starting from October 12, various apex students organizations have come out in support of the phase-I agitation.

Apex students organizations like the Ao Students’ Conference (AKM), All Sumi Students’ Union (SKK), Angami Students’ Union, Rengma Students’ Union, Lotha Students’ Union, Chakhesang Students’ Union and Konyak Students’ Union have decided to impose the indefinite bandh on movement of government registered vehicles under their jurisdiction except for those exempted categories.

Meanwhile, Angami Students’ Union, president Vizokho Zashümo and general secretary Petekhrietuo Kiewhuo said that, despite Angami Public Organisation’s appeal to call off the band, the union stand united with the NSF, ENSF and the students’ fraternity across the state on the issue of mainstreaming Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan teachers of 2010 & 2013 batches.

“With no malice or ill intention, we are of the considered opinion that the government should by virtue of its existence as a welfare state cannot and should not deny people of its commitment made to its citizens. We see no reason whatsoever that this matter should not be given due justice” ASU stated.

While acknowledging the concern raised by APO, ASU assured that any activity related to Covid-19 or the Naga solution will not be hampered.

He said the agitation was over a genuine issue and appealed to APO to understand the situation and extend solidarity with the two student unions.

School Education Advisor appeals

These two batches of SSA and RMSA teachers were recruited through the respective district selection boards and it took the department time to undertake massive exercise to crosscheck records.

Meanwhile, the adviser said comments of personnel & administrative reforms (P&AR) and finance departments had been received, adding the school education department was in the process of submitting the issue to the cabinet.

Pointing out that the chief secretary too had issued a clarification on October 10, 2020 on the matter and as can be understood from the above, Sukhalu claimed that the department was taking all due action required.

He therefore appealed to NSF and ENSF and the teachers concerned not to take the extreme step of agitation, especially at a time when the people were suffering from the effects of pandemic.
