The Horticulture Department is exploring export opportunities to make Nagaland the Kiwi State of India, informed Horticulture & Women Resource Development Minister Salhoutuonuo Kruse on Saturday.
Kiwi grows well in the districts of Kohima, Phek, Zunheboto, and the Eastern Nagaland region, she added while addressing the 40th general conference of the Chakhroma Students’ Union at Tsiepama on March 15.
Meanwhile, Horticulture Department’s Annual Administrative Report 2024-25 maintained that over the past year, the department has been working tirelessly to implement various schemes and initiatives aimed at transforming the horticultural landscape of Nagaland.
Among the State’s key horticultural developments, kiwi cultivation stands out as a significant opportunity for farmers, added the report tabled at the recently concluded 6th session of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly.
Given Nagaland’s favourable climate and terrain, kiwi cultivation is rapidly emerging as a high-value crop with great potential for both domestic and export markets, it said.
“The department is actively promoting kiwi cultivation through area expansion, technical support, and market linkages to help farmers tap into this lucrative sector,” it maintained.
If harnessed effectively, the report stated, kiwi farming can greatly contribute to boosting rural incomes and establishing Nagaland as a major player in India’s kiwi production.
Furthermore, Nagaland is geographically well positioned to access international markets for kiwi fruit.
The report, however, did not provide details on the magnitude of kiwi production in Nagaland.
