Dimapur | December 6
Dimapur, the commercial hub of Nagaland, continues to grapple with poor road conditions, leaving residents frustrated by a recurring cycle of neglect and substandard repairs. From mud-clogged, pothole-riddled streets during the monsoons to dust-laden roads in the dry winter months, the city’s infrastructure woes remain unaddressed.
Key roads, like the Tajen Ao Road from City Tower to the DC Court area, have drawn public ire for their dilapidated state, despite repeated media attention. While recent repairs have patched over some of the worst sections, citizens complain about shoddy quality of work.
Inspections reveal uneven surfaces, inconsistencies, and incomplete patchwork, posing hazards for two-wheeler riders and cyclists.
Stretches in areas such as Signal Angami, Golaghat Road, Kalibari Road are just some examples of the sad state of Dimapur. Other vital routes, such as the Dhobinullah to Marwaripatti and Murgipatti stretches – part of the city’s commercial nerve center – remain in deplorable condition.
Adding to the chaos is the longstanding issue of jurisdictional confusion. With national highways intersecting the city, the responsibility for road maintenance often falls into a gray area between the Public Works Department (Roads and Bridges) and National Highways authorities, delaying much-needed repairs.
Traffic snarls have compounded residents’ woes, particularly following renovation work on the city’s old road overbridge (ROB), which began in October. Originally slated for completion within six months, the ROB is now expected to be motorable by January 2025. The ongoing construction has led to significant traffic diversions, causing gridlocks across Dimapur despite new rules and diligent efforts by traffic personnel.
As Dimapur’s road network continues to crumble under the weight of neglect, citizens remain hopeful for long-term solutions to break this cycle of inadequate repairs and administrative delays.
