Frustration is mounting among residents of Kiphire over the government’s failure to provide quality roads in the district headquarters. This is exacerbated by poorly maintained streets, riddled with potholes and cracks, making it a daily struggle for motorists and pedestrians.
Speaking to The Morung Express, a senior official from the Public Works Department office in Kiphire, on the condition of anonymity, stated: “The concerned department from the main office in Kohima should allocate funding to areas where improvement is needed.”
“Improvement should not just involve earth filling or cutting; it should focus on permanent structures like flexible and rigid pavements,” the official added.
Voicing concern over the poor road conditions, Yangkhong, a young entrepreneur, pointed out that the problem is not limited to vehicles but also affects pedestrians. The elderly and children, in particular, are finding it difficult to walk and commute along these roads, as they become a safety hazard, especially after it rains, he added.
Likewise, Sechumla, a concerned mother, also shared her frustration and highlighted that the roads are so uneven, and the potholes fill with water, creating breeding grounds for health hazards as waste accumulates, further damaging the roads.
