Education for Change: Nagaland observes National Education Day 2024

Joining the rest of the country, Nagaland today observed National Education Day 2024 under the theme “Education for Change” at Alder College, Kohima.

National Education Day is celebrated on 11 November every year in India to commemorate the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the first education minister of independent India, who served from August 15, 1947 until February 2, 1958.

Gracing the occasion as the guest speaker, Nagaland’s school education & SCERT advisor Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome said that education is not just about ability to read and write but there are wide spectrum of literacy around us in term of financial literacy, emotional literacy and social literacy.

With the introduction of the National Education Policy 2020 at the national curriculum framework, he said, India is on the edge to do some dramatic restructuring and “we hope that along with the rest of the country, we will be able to take our state forward also.”

“Our job today, especially in the field of education, is to improve institutions,” he said.

Stating that there are many well trained teachers in the government schools, he said “We are trying to bring structural reforms.”

Referring to huge investment in education sector, Dr Yhome said that Nagas are spending more than Rs. 3000 crores annually just for education.

Meanwhile, he said that starting from next year, the state government will be introducing the Nagaland Education Service.

Later, Dr Yhome released a peer- reviewed annual interdisciplinary journal published by Alder College, Kohima.

Call for strengthening educational institutions
In keynote address, Nagaland Education Association (NEA) president Dr Bweyhunle Khing asserted that the quality of the society, the level of the nation depends upon the quality of our education system.

She stressed on the need to strengthen and empower the educational institutions to produce good people “so as to create a good society and a peaceful nation.”

“If we want to compete with others in this competitive era, we need to give maximum investment in the field of education,” Dr Khing said.

Further, she challenged the teachers, parents, educationists, administrators, politicians, social workers and any profession from any field to come forward and join hands together “to make our country- one of the best education system to compete with the rest of the world.”

NEA general secretary Dr Kholia said that National Education Day is significant as it raises awareness on the value of education in the society and reflects on the challenges face by the educational centres and strive for improvement and excellence.

The programme was organised by Nagaland Education Association (NEA) in collaboration with Department of Education, Alder College Kohima.

The programme was chaired by NEA finance secretary Dr Narotola Imchen while Dr Levino L Yhoshii, Dean Research & Development Alder College invoked God’s blessings.

The programme also witnessed poem recitation by Keneileno Jovita Vitsu, Little Flower Higher Secondary School Kohima, special number from students of Education Department, Alder College and Trio entitled “Why” by Sapna, Neke and Thushila from Little Flower Higher Secondary School Kohima.

Vote of thanks was proposed by NEA information & publicity secretary Rose Kithan.

Dr Keneisenuo Chase, HoD, Department of Education, Alder College and Dr Medotsino Nakhro, Joint Secretary NEA assisted as recorder of the proceedings.
