TTV crowdfunds aid for landslide affected families in Tuensang

The Tuensang Voice (TTV), a social activist group active in Tuensang town since 2012, organised a crowdfunding campaign from August 6 to 15 to support families affected by the recent landslide in Tuensang.

On August 18, TTV members visited Bazar C, NST, and the two relief camps, distributing financial aid to the victims.

TTV, founded by a group of like-minded individuals, has a history of community service in Tuensang, with early efforts including “Mission Pothole,” inspired by The Naga Blog’s similar initiative across Nagaland.

The group has also led cleanliness drives, renovated the Clock Tower in 2014, repainted and decorated the maternity ward at the District Hospital of Tuensang, and refurbished the park within the hospital. TTV has also been involved in distributing free clothing to patients and providing assistance to victims of house fires and other crises.

Langachuba, a founding member of TTV, emphasised the group’s enduring commitment: “We may have been quiet for some time, but we never stopped being ready to help. Today, as we meet the families affected by this landslide, we’re reminded of why we started – to support our community in times of need, and we will continue to do so.”

The landslide in Tuensang, triggered by prolonged and intense rainfall since April 16, has caused significant damage, with over 378 residential structures affected. At least 25 houses were completely destroyed, 47 severely damaged, and 306 partially damaged. Approximately 768 individuals have been displaced from the Phinjang sector of St John A Ward and NST Ward of Tuensang Town, with temporary shelters established at Tuensang Village C/Khel.

In response to the crisis, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Tuensang held a meeting with ward and sector chairmen of the affected colonies on July 25.

A physical verification was conducted on July 27, leading to the decision to establish a relief camp at Tuensang Village C/Khel Youth Hall and the Old Church Building.

The camp currently shelters 34 families, totalling 164 individuals, providing essential facilities, including food, water, sanitation, medical care, and educational support for children.

During their visit, TTV members met with sector and ward leaders and handed over the financial aid to the affected families and the Disaster Management Relief Cell at the relief camp. The funds were raised through their crowdfunding efforts.

One of the beneficiaries expressed gratitude, saying, “We are still not sure what to do next as most of us here are daily wage earners. However, our children and all of us here at the relief camp are well taken care of, and we can’t thank enough for the help that has come to us from different organisations and individuals in many ways.”

“Your visit and support at this moment are a big help to us. We are incredibly thankful,” stated a resident of Bazar C, whose house was destroyed just this morning.
