Sazolie College confer degrees to 163 graduates

Sazolie College today conferred degrees to 163 graduates during its 1st Graduation Day in the presence of Prof Glenn T. Thong, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Nagaland University, Kohima Campus, Meriema.

Sazolie College is located at Phezhu, Jotsoma, near Kohima.

The graduates awarded with degrees includes; General- 42, Education Honours-11, English Honours-22, History Honours-20, Political Science Honours- 24, Psychology Honours-30 and Sociology Honours- 14.

In academic awards, Olemsunep Longkumer from Department of Psychology was conferred with Alumni Academic Excellence Award, Management Topper’s Award and Mavericks Academic Excellence Award.

Gracing the occasion as commencement speaker, Prof Thong told the graduates that “Circumstances may force some of you to deviate from your goals due to insecurities or inexperience, forcing expectations or standards of others on you. But, you have to seriously take charge of your own life. Chase your dreams! Chart out your own destiny.”

Prof Thong said that success in life has always been humankind’s primary goal, but success comes only to those who dare to struggle.

Going through tough times is not easy; but there is no substitute for hard work. Many others have risen through great challenges in life. Each of us possesses the grit and the enterprise, but very few actually use these gifts, he said. To survive in this wide, uncaring world you will have to work unceasingly and persistently, Prof Thong said.

Prof Thong told the graduates that trying to get a job will be “your most challenging venture.”

Today, thousands compete for very few jobs in the government sector, but you should not be disheartened. There are other jobs with multi-national companies, various State & Central Civil Services, etc. The Combined Armed Police Forces, comprising the BSF, CISF, RPF, CRPF, ITBF, and NSG are good options, he said.

“There are numerous other areas. However, most opportunities available, are for the challenge-takers, so you have to grow beyond mediocrity,” Prof Thong said.

He maintained that graduates represent the bright young minds of the society today.

Stating that many others less fortunate than them, dropped off midway, he said, “Embarking on this new journey, you cannot be cut-off from the realities afflicting society.”

You have to help rid society of the numerous injustices and imbalances that we see today, he said.

“Being privileged with higher education, you have to give back to society. This also includes your duty towards our environment. You must be the torchbearers for change. You must take the initiative to educate society to adopt certain basic practices, such as ecological restoration, biodiversity conservation, etc,” he said.

‘Young people should lead a productive life’
Sazolie College Principal, Dr Gopal Chetri said Sazolie College was established in 2005. It got permanent affiliation to Nagaland University in 2010 in 2012. The college started post graduate course in history and political science in 2019.

The college completed 2nd cycle of NAAC assessment – 2023 with B++ grade with CGPA of 2.87, AICTE approval 2024, IIC (Institution Innovation Centre) Certification by Ministry of Education – 2024.

He congratulated Olemsunep Longkumer for securing topper position in Psychology subject in Nagaland University. He also congratulated the 19 students who secured CGPA of 6 and above.

Congratulating all 163 batch of 2024 students, who successfully graduated this year from Sazolie College, Dr Chetri said, “Overall, the students performance is quite satisfactory.”

“As you move forward, always remember that your education is not just about the degree you have earned, but about the person you have become. It is about the knowledge that you have acquired, the skills that you have developed, the relationships you have built, and the memories you have created,” he stated.

Young people should lead a productive life after acquiring degree from college and university and contribute towards the well being of the community and the society, he said.

Earlier, academic report was given by Dr Puspanjoli D. Nakhro, Academic Dean while Olemsunep Longkumer delivered valedictory speech. The programme was led by Tenso Phom, Asst Prof, Department of History.
