Kigwema-Mima road blocked by landslide

A major landslide which has occurred at Kigwema village, in Kohima district has damaged houses and the road between Kigwema and Mima Village has been completely blocked. Villagers in the area informed that the landslide triggered by incessant rain had occured more than a week ago. 

Awaiting assistance from State Government, villagers led by the Kigwema Youth Organization (KSU) today undertook work at the landslide area. A village functionary informed that around 80-90 volunteers used bamboo in the slopes to stabilize the erosion. 

Further it was informed that cracks have occurred in houses affected by the landslide, and the road has been completely taken down due to incessant rain over a week ago. 

When asked about measures taken by the government on this, MLA for Southern Angami I AC, Kevipodi Sophie informed that he had taken stock of the landslide and visited the area to ascertain the situation. Sophie further said that on July 8, he along with the Executive Engineer, PWD, Er. Wapanginba M. Jamir; SDO (Civil), Jakhama Nockpai Konyak; and village functionaries undertook a spot study. The officials were tasked to assess the situation and damages.

“After receiving reports from both the authorities, we will be taking up the issue with the State Government for seeking assistance,” he informed. Sophie said he had also briefed the Chief Minister in this regard. 

As for the damages in the area, he informed that immediate relief has been provided to the families affected by the landslide.

The road connects villages of Southern Angami area, while also leading to Phek and Zunheboto districts. However, alternate road are also available above the road where landslide occurred; or via Viswema and via the BSF camp, Kohima.
