CM Rio seeks AG’s intervention on 45 Naga youths detained in Punjab

KOHIMA, JUNE 23 (MExN): Nagaland Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio discussed the issue of detention of 45 Naga youths in the Mohali Jail, Punjab with Advocate General K N Balgopal, at New Delhi on June 22. 

The Chief Minister directed the Advocate General to personally intervene in the case and asked him to depute his team to take urgent necessary actions for the release of the innocent Naga youths who are falsely implicated in this case, a DIPR report has stated. 

Rio also directed the Resident Commissioner in-charge of Nagaland House, New Delhi to be in touch with the families of the innocent Naga youth and extend all necessary help required for them.

The parents/relatives of the Naga youth have been requested to contact the Government of Nagaland to provide all information and cooperation for getting these innocent Naga Youths released, the DIPR report stated. 

According to reports, the youths from Nagaland are languishing in Punjab jails on non-bailable charges related to cybercrime cases. They were rpeortedly arrested on May 14 & 15 when the Punjab Police busted two fake call centres. 

The situation came to light through Neeraj Punj, a volunteer with Helping Hands, an NGO in Chandigarh, revealed the news on June 18. Punj highlighted the profound lack of awareness among the parents of the detained individuals regarding their children’s imprisonment in Punjab, it was reported. 

He also highlighted the need to scrutinize the authenticity of recruiting companies that lure unsuspecting individuals from the North East under false pretences of employment, subsequently involving them in criminal activities.

On June 21, Helping Hands Nagaland chapter also urged the State Government and its agencies to immediately intervene and help in rescuing the Naga youths on a priority basis.
