Cyclone ‘Remal’ to bring heavy rain in Nagaland, NE

Dimapur, May 24 (MExN): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) updated on Thursday that a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal (BoB) would intensify and reach Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts as a severe cyclonic storm by Sunday evening.

Named Cyclone ‘Remal,’ the IMD reported that it moved northeastwards of BoB during the past 12 hours and lay over the same area at 5:30 PM on May 23.

It is very likely to concentrate into a Depression over the central parts of BoB by Friday morning and continue moving northeastwards, intensifying further as a cyclonic storm over east-central BoB by May 25 morning, the IMD said.

Subsequently, it would move nearly northwards and reach near Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts by May 26 evening as a severe cyclonic storm, the IMD added in an update Thursday evening, it added.

As a result, the IMD forecasted widespread rainfall in Nagaland and other North-East States from May 26-29.

Further, heavy rainfall at isolated places was predicted over the state on May 25 along with thunderstorms accompanied by lightning & gusty winds (speed reaching 40-50 kmph) at isolated places.

“Heavy rainfall at isolated places over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura,” the IMD said.

On May 27, “Heavy to very heavy rainfall” was forecasted at isolated places over Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura.

On May 24, the IMD said that thunderstorm accompanied with lightning & gusty with lightning & gusty winds (speed reaching 30-40 kmph) are likely at isolated places over Nagaland.
