The 106th Naga Club foundation day was observed at Lotha Hoho Conference Hall, Wokha Town on January 7 with Advisor, Naga Club, Medoselhou Keretsu gracing the occasion as the guest speaker.
Medoselhou Keretsu speaking on the occasion stated that the Naga Club is the body of the Nagas that has been a platform of unity among the Naga people and their political as well social rights for over a century.
He mentioned that Naga Club was formed in the year 1918 with Late Rheichalie Pienyu as the first president, serving the Naga Club for 24 years.
He also reminded that on January 7, 1982, the Naga Elders General Conference was convened at Kohima Village Panchayat Hall. “It was a Naga Public meeting which was attended by all Naga tribes and it was on this auspicious day that the Naga Club was formally installed by electing the office bearers with Azuto Rengma as the president. The elected office bearers were entrusted to preside over the affairs of the Naga Club on that significant day; thus January 7 became the Naga Club foundation day which is now observed and celebrated every year “, he added.
He also said that the inception of Naga Club is significant in the history of the Naga people as it was formed a century ago, at a time where there was no means of communication technology or no contact with the outside world.
Despite having no access to modern education or information on world politics or human rights, he reminded that some visionary leaders had realized and understood that all Nagas are one and belong to one family, which later confirmed the unity of the Naga people and asserted their right to live together as a family as well as an independent nation.
The Naga Club submitted the Naga Political Memorandum to the British Statutory Commission on January 10, 1929. He also informed that the Naga Club representation to Simon commission became the cornerstone of Naga political movement as it defined rights of the Nagas and still stands as one of the most significant steps taken to assert the uniqueness and oneness of the Nagas.
He also hoped that the spirit of the 1951 Naga National Plebiscite continues to live among the Nagas and stand for Naga unity in forgiveness and oneness. Keretsu maintained that the Naga Club belongs to all Nagas, irrespective of locations.
Koulachalie Seyei, in his presidential speech, highlighted on the values of the Naga forefathers who survived turbulent times and united the Nagas.
The programme was chaired by General Secretary, Naga Club, KN Mhonthung Lotha; welcome address by Lotha Hoho Chairman Mhondamo Ovung; Presidential speech by Naga Club President Koulachalie Seyei; prayer of blessings upon Naga Club Leader pronounced by Executive Secretary LBCA, Vankhosang Rev.
