December 24 : Merangkongtsur Telongjem Dimapur (MTD) organised the second edition of Advance Christmas Carol in Dimapur on Saturday. Hundreds of people braving cold weather joined the carol procession led by Merangkong marching band from Old NST flyover to Clock Tower via Plaza Junction Police Point and culminating at Old NST/ Railway Station area.
The procession was flagged off by advisor fisheries and aquatic resources, A Pangjung Jamir.
Commissioner of Police (CP) Dimapur, Kevithuto Sophie, Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) administrator, W. Manpai Phom and host of dignitaries were also present.
MTD president Mereninla Yaden, said that the tradition of Christmas Carolling, led by the Merangkong village marching band, dated back to the mid-fifties when Indian Army personnel joined Christmas celebrations in the village.
Over the years, she said that the event evolved into a competition among “Khels” in the village, and has now become an integral part of their festive culture.
Highlighting the importance of fostering communal spirit in urban areas like Dimapur, MTD president stressed the need for a medium that encouraged inclusive celebrations. Expressing concern over secularisation of Christmas, she called for a return to the core Christian values emphasizing the urgency of countering “un-Christian” practices during the holiday season, which has resulted in the loss of precious lives.
Further, calling for unity among Nagas, particularly the youth, Mereninla Yaden expressed hope that Churches and other Civil Society Organizations would organize similar programmes in the coming years envisioning shared celebration that transcends cultural boundaries and promotes the true spirit of Christmas.
