Nagaland commemorates Atal Bihari Vajpayee Jayanti

The Raj Bhavan Kohima today organised a befitting programme in commemoration of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Jayanti at Dr Imkongliba Ao Hall, Raj Bhavan Kohima. 

The first mobile service in Nagaland was launched by Vajpayee during his visit to Kohima on October 28, 2003.

Addressing the gathering, Nagaland Governor La Ganesan paid his respects and tribute to Atal Bihari Vajpayee- one of the most iconic and revered leaders of independent India. “It thrills me that we have come together to celebrate his birth anniversary and celebrate the legacy of a man who left an unforgettable mark on the political landscape of our country,” he said.

Ganesan said that Vajpayee, the former Prime Minister of India was a visionary statesman and an eloquent orator “whose impact on the nation was profound and enduring.” 

Born on December 25, 1924, Vajpayee’s journey was marked by unwavering dedication to the service of the nation. He began his career as a journalist and later emerged as a prominent leader in the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the precursor to the Bharatiya Janata Party. His dedication and commitment to the ideology of the party propelled him to ascend the ranks and assume the role of Prime Minister three times.

His tenure as PM saw significant strides in economic reforms, infrastructure development and India’s Nuclear Program. He played a crucial role in fostering India’s foreign relations and addressed issues of national importance with the finest diplomacy and conviction, the Governor said.

“It was under his leadership that India conducted successful nuclear tests at Pokhran in 1998, showcasing India’s capability as a Nuclear Power. This pivotal moment in India’s history demonstrated his unwavering commitment of safeguarding India’s national security,” Ganesan said.

‘Vajpayee understood importance of inclusive governance’
He said that Vajpayee was a visionary leader who understood the importance of inclusive governance and worked tirelessly to bridge the gap between different ideologies and communities, adding that “He was known for his statesmanship and his ability to reach across party lines and build consensus on important issues. His policies and decisions were guided by the principle of constructive engagement among diverse political parties.”

“As we celebrate his birth anniversary, let us reflect on the values that he stood for; integrity, perseverance and a deep commitment to the welfare of the nation. His leadership exemplified humility, kindness and a genuine concern for all citizens, regardless of their background or belief. May his legacy serve as a guiding light, reminding us of the power of unity and the ability to rise above differences to work towards a common goal,” Ganesan said.

“Let us strife to build a society that embraces diversity, a society that fosters dialogue and work towards the betterment of all. May his principles continue to inspire us and guide us as we work toward building a stronger and more harmonious India,” the Governor added.

Metha narrate Vajpayee’s visit to Nagaland in 2003
Delivering short speech, Abu Metha, advisor to Chief Minister of Nagaland narrated the three days visit of Vajpayee to Nagaland in 2003. During Vajpayee’s visit, Metha said that he (Vajpayee) announced to the word that India understands and recognizes the unique history and culture of Naga people.

“That statement is a historic. That statement strengthens peace. That statement gives confidence between Kohima and Delhi,” Metha said.

He said that Vajpayee announced an economic package of Rs. 1050 crore during his visit with Rs. 250 crore for youth empowerment to create 25,000 job for Naga youth. He had concern for Naga people and appreciated the Naga way of life, Metha said.

He said that Nagaland is the first state this year in India, commemorating Vajpayee’s birthday, which falls on December 25, which is also Christmas day.

Referring to commemoration programme held today, Metha said “In Nagaland and for Christian across the world, Christmas is the most important day of the year. We have religious occasion, Church service, family fellowship and various other programmes. Therefore, I want to appreciate Governor for commemorating this occasion today ahead of December 25.”

It shows and indicates that Governor of Nagaland appreciates and understands the sensitivity of the Naga people and accordingly this programme was organized today, he said.

“Thank you Governor for understanding the sentiments of our people and working in close coordination and connection with the people of the state,” Metha added.

Earlier, Rajesh Soundararajan, secretary to Governor of Nagaland shared introductory note at the programme. Governor felicitated artist Vineizoto Tase who painted the portrait of Vajpayee.   Lighting of the lamp and floral tribute marked the commemoration programme.
