A comprehensive sensitisation programme on the roles and responsibilities of ward and village child protection and welfare committees was conducted by the District Child Protection Unit, Department of Social Welfare, Tuensang.
The event, as part of the Child Rights Week, took place at the DC Conference Hall in Tuensang town on November 18.
The resource person Yangthriba A Sangtam, District Child Protection Officer (DCPO), Tuensang underscored the crucial role of public and CSOs in supporting the Department of Social Welfare, emphasising that child protection is a collective responsibility. Addressing the age range of 0-18 years, Sangtam outlined the structure under DCPU, including the Juvenile Justice Board, Child Working Committee, and SGDU, responsible for policing.
He stressed the importance of village-level committees in creating awareness about child protection and safety, discouraging direct referral of child-related issues to Juvenile Justice Board but reporting them to DCPU, CWC, and SGDU. The resource person delved into various issues, including child sexual abuse, child labour (especially domestic help), illegal adoption, runaway children, child marriage, substance abuse, and more.
Rights of Children
Sangtam elaborated on the rights of children, emphasising the need for proper drinking water, protection from abuse, education, and the right to play and express opinions.
He highlighted the role of the Village Child Committee (VCC) in ensuring child protection at the village level and urged immediate reporting in cases of orphans. The counsellor’s assistance for children facing mental health issues was also underscored.
Guidelines and Services
He also urged adherence to the rules and regulations of Ward Unions, emphasizing that laws should not be taken into one’s hands but reported to the department. He clarified that children aged 18 and below should be labelled as delinquent, not accused.
Three Child Protection Services, Observation Home in Tuensang village, Bethel Children Home, and Kohdi Children Home in Tuensang town, were acknowledged as sponsored and funded by the Department of Social Welfare.
During the discussion hour, participants engaged in dialogue about issues such as safe drinking water. Alemla Chang, Member of Juvenile Justice Board, delivered a vote of gratitude, expressing appreciation for the enlightening session and stressing collective efforts for child welfare.
The event was lead by Lunong Lakiu, ADEO, DCPU, Tuensang as chairperson while welcome note was delivered by Akhumba Yimkhiung, Member, Child Welfare Committee, Tuensang.
The sensitisation programme empowered participants with knowledge and responsibilities, fostering a commitment to ensuring the well-being of children in Tuensang district.
