World Day for Decent Work observed in Nagaland

Dimapur, October 10 (MExN): NDWM Nagaland Region in collaboration with Assisi Centre for Integrated Development (ACID) and All Nagaland Domestic Workers’ Union (NDWM) commemorated World Day for Decent Work on October 7 in Dimapur.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr T Limanochet Jamir, Principal, City Law College, Dimapur pointed out that decent work has four key components: employment conditions, social security, rights at the workplace, and social dialogue. “Decent work sums up the aspirations of people in their working lives,” Jamir stated.

“Transform your mentality, educate yourself,” he encouraged the gathering while stating, “Domestic work is work and you are workers, plan your time well, give time for work, family and also strengthen family bond because domestic work is the same work at home and at the workplace.” He also said, “When you get extra work, ask for the extra pay because you are not for free service.” Jamir also maintained that the mentality should be changed, “unless and until the domestic workers change your mentality, outsiders won’t understand its importance.”

During the commemoration it was also highlighted the need for domestic workers to share their experience, learn to value their work, improve work skills, and verbal and non verbal communications. “Bargain for your rights, learn to work together, be united,” the speaker asserted.

NDWM Nagaland Coordinator, Sr Pramila highlighted the significance of the day. She reaffirmed that decent work means opportunities for everyone to get work that is productive and delivers a fair income, security in the workplace and social protection for families, better prospects for personal development and social integration.

“The work done by the domestic workers many times goes unnoticed; since domestic work is mainly done by women many people don’t value it. Even the domestic workers who are the members of the All Nagaland Domestic Workers Union should know its importance and they themselves should learn to value it,” Sr Pramila asserted.

The programme was attended by 160 members from different colonies, stated a press release received here.
