Poultry ban issue: PUD urges AH&VS Advisor to revoke letter to KAAC

In a new development in the ongoing tussle over the ban on import of live poultry coming across the border from Karbi Anglong, Assam, the Poultry Union Dimapur (PUD) has appealed to Nagaland State Advisor for Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, Kazheto Kinimi, to revoke an official letter he issued to the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) requesting for checking of all livestock consignments coming into Nagaland.

The letter addressed to Chief Executive Member of the KAAC, dated June 17, 2023, had stated that the Nagaland State Government was making all efforts to ensure there was no spread of any contagious disease in livestock such as bird flu/swine flu and sale of dead poultry products.

“In view of the above, it is kindly requested that before transit to Nagaland, all documentation be carried out in KAAC area to ensure authorised entry into the state,” it added.

In view of aforesaid letter, PUD President Tiameren Aier and General Secretary Keyigwalunga opined that although it was issued in good faith and was meant for public safety, certain unscrupulous individuals from the Karbi Anglong side were taking undue advantage to exploit the local poultry traders of Nagaland.

They categorically maintained that all such inspection should be done within the State by the competent authorities i.e., the State Veterinary Department and not by third parties from outside.

In this connection, the PUD General Secretary expressed hope that if the order was revoked by the Advisor then such practices of the illegal syndicate would automatically be stopped.

The union also reaffirmed its commitment to stand against any external exploitation on the business community of the state and the general consumers.

It was further learnt that the PUD, with the support of several Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), would be meeting the Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur, Sachin Jaiswal to discuss the ongoing situation.

Meanwhile, the ban on the import and sale of poultry entering from Karbi Anglong Assam entered day 6 with no clear indication of any letdown on the imbroglio. The PUD had imposed the ban after allegations had emerged of a syndicate operating from Assam to control the poultry supply in Karbi Anglong whereby consignments of Nagaland based traders were also affected.

Several business establishments within Dimapur have down their shutters while some were selling local poultries at Rs 500-550 per kg at New Market.
