Dimapur/Imphal, July 17 (MExN): The Manipur Police today informed that nine persons has been arrested in connection with the murder of a woman at Keibi Heikakmapal Maning Ching in the Sawombung area of Manipur’s Imphal East district on Saturday.

The arrested individuals include five women, informed an update by the Manipur Police on its official Twitter account. 
“*9 (nine) persons including 5 (five) women have been arrested by  Imphal East District Police in connection with the incident in which one woman was found dead at Keibi Heikakmapal Maning Ching on 15.07.2023,” it added.

In connection with the case, two arms and five ammunitions as well as a car were seized, it added. 

According to the PTI news agency, the deceased woman, in her mid-50s was shot in her face at her residence by some armed men on Saturday evening and they reportedly disfigured her face before fleeing.

Meanwhile, the United Naga Council (UNC) has announced a 12-hour “total shutdown in all the Naga areas in the state of Manipur” from 6 am to 6 pm on Monday, July 17 in connection with the killing of a Naga woman in Imphal. 

Among others, it demanded that the State Government must immediately constitute a judiciary inquiry committee and arrest the perpetrators of the crime including those complicit in the act of crime.

As per the UNC, the deceased belong to Maring Naga community. 

19 arrested for torching trucks 
In another update, the Manipur Police informed that 19 persons have been arrested by the Imphal West District Police in connection with the torching of 3 trucks at Awang Sekmai Mayai Leikai Lampak, Imphal West on July 15.

“They were produced before the Duty Magistrate Imphal West today (16.07.2023) and 17 (seventeen) were remanded in police custody for 4 (four) days and 2 (two) were referred to Juvenile Justice Board,” the police said. 

Raids were continuing to arrest others accused in the case, it added. 

The torching reportedly occurred on Saturday at around 9:55 am after the three empty trucks were intercepted by a mob between Sekmai LPG Bottling Plant and National Highway-2.

 “Security Forces dispersed the mob and fire tenders prevented from further damage. Raids were conducted and many persons have been detained for further verification and necessary action,” the police had informed on July 15.  

The Manipur Police also updated on Sunday that during the last 24 hours, intermittent firings by armed miscreants were reported at few places. 

“Police and Central forces launched operation in Phaileng area, Kangpokpi District and two arms and 9 ammunitions were recovered and the miscreants were repelled,” it said. 

The Thoubal District Police also recovered 12 magazines and 25 rounds of ammunition in a search operation on Saturday in Heirok area, it added. 

According to the Manipur Police, a total of 124 ‘Nakas’ (checkpoints) have been set up across the State, both in the hill and the valley districts.

Some 586 persons have been detained in different districts of the State, it added.

FIR against singer 
Meanwhile, an FIR has been lodged against singer Jayenta Loukrakpam, popularly known as Tapta, for his “controversial song” that triggered a row.

As per a PTI report, the Zomi Students’ Federation (ZSF) filed the First Information Report alleging that the song’s “lyrics called for violence against a community.”

The complaint, filed at the Churachandpur Police Station on July 13, accused the singer of promoting enmity between different communities, it said. 

According to the report, Taptan earned popularity in Manipur with his debut album titled ‘Power of Attraction’ and over the years, has garnered a substantial following across all communities in the state, earning him a dedicated fan base.
On Sunday Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Sunday questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence on Manipur violence saying that though he has enquired twice about Delhi’s flood situation, he has not uttered a word on Manipur and not even spoken to the chief minister.

In a long tweet, Ramesh went on to say that leave alone calling up the Manipur chief minister (N Biren Singh), Modi has not even spoken to minister of state for external affairs Rajkumar Ranjan Singh, who is from the state, IANS reported. 
“The PM’s attitude is really beyond comprehension of any normal human being,” he said.

Hundreds of people have been killed while thousands others injured and displaced in Manipur due to the ongoing clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities since the first week May.
