DIMAPUR, JULY 15 (MExN): The Urban Vector Borne Disease Scheme (UVBDS), Dimapur Urban Council Chairmen Federation (DUCCF) and GB Union Sadar Dimapur held a joint meeting on July 14 at Hotel Acacia- Dimapur, to observe anti Dengue month 2023 and to deliberate on the Dengue outbreak in Dimapur town.
Highlighting on anti Dengue month, Kikolul Khieya, Assistant Director, UVBDS explained that Dengue is transmitted through Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes which breeds in water holding containers like, flower pots, coconut shells, broken and discarded vessels and tyres, AC, refrigerator and water tanks etc.
He urged both the DUCCF & GB’s Dimapur Sadar to spread awareness on Dengue and its preventive measures to the general public. He highlighted that the menace of Dengue can be controlled and reduced by means of source reduction through the combine effort of community service by observing cleanliness & dry day once in a week in every household / colonies / villages.
DUCCF vice president, Tongzuk Pongen affirmed that Dengue can only be controlled or reduced through community effort and suggested a resolution be passed on observing cleanliness & dry day.
Vice president, GB’s Union Dimapur Sadar, W Kholie Kapfo stated that Dimapur town being in hot climate zone is a hotspot for vector borne diseases like malaria and dengue and the need of the hour is community effort and practices of civic sense to prevent its spread.
While appealing all concerned to maintain hygienic life style within and outside one’s compound, Kapfo lamented how citizens in Dimapur would rather throw garbage in the drainage at night instead of making effort to go the garbage collection point to deposit their household wastes. He also urged every stakeholder to change the mindset that keeping one’s own compound clean is enough.
Members at the meeting also dwelt on the need for more funding from the concerned department and the state government in order to control the Dengue menace.
After deliberation, the joint meeting resolved to observe cleanliness-cum-dry day every Saturday within Dimapur urban town from July 15 onwards from 6 -8 AM till the onset of winter season.
It is also resolved that colony council and GB’s shall supervise and carry routine checking / surprise checking within their respective colonies. The Department along with colony council will spread awareness campaign starting from July 17 – 28 with 11 teams covering 100 colonies in Dimapur urban areas.
